Old Boys win in Cambridgeshire

Waresley vs Heathens at Waresley Park 16/5/21

The Heathen’s got their 2021 season off to a successful start as they visited Waresley CC in Cambridgeshire for the third year.

The BCC old boys proved too good for their hosts on a pitch which was helpful for the seamers and an outfield that was very lush. Batting first we set a stiff target of 180 in 40 overs given the conditions. Mark Calnan top scored with 46 and found the boundary a few times once he worked out that 6’s were easier to hit than 4’s. Paul Frith made 23, Simon Gane a classy 34 in good time and Jim Fleming 25 (possibly a personal best for Jim in a Heathens shirt).

When it was our turn to bowl the experience of Andy Watts with 2 wickets and the miserly Anthony Jones soon had us in a strong position. The opposition were never really able to get up with the rate despite some unnecessary no balls from Stuart Mullins who was maybe a little bit nervous on his first game back on the big time for a while.

In the field Mel Ragnauth was like lighting to the ball as he frolicked in the covers like a new born lamb enjoying the country air. Behind the sticks Simon Williams gave a master class with the mitts, as the ball spat and reared from the height of Watts, hitting the ridge up the hill.

Waresley were restricted to 147 in their 40 overs and Omar bought us all a beer!

Next up is the inter Heathens fixture to celebrate the unveiling of the 2 memorial benches at the Rectory Field on June the 6th in memory of club stalwarts Tessa Khan and Nigel Sedgley.
