Second half come back not enough for Black Horse

Following a three week break the Horse returned to action in the cup quarter final, away at Chesham. With a win and a loss this season it was always going to be a tight game and the first twenty minutes saw no points scored. After Isaac Aitken missed the opportunity to put the Horse ahead with a penalty, Chesham took advantage and scored a penalty of their own. At 3-0 up Chesham then scored their first try of the day, their 10 breaking through the middle to score and convert to leave the scoreline 10-0 at half time.
The Horse had the conditions for the second half but conceded a second try almost instantly. A scrum from 5m was pushed over by Chesham to put them 15-0 up. Chesham were then reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes and this pushed the Horse to start their come back. After numerous phases through the forwards, Tom Grover picked the ball and scored the Horses first try. 5 minutes later Rob Scrimshaw picked the ball at the back of the scrum, saw the gap where the 15th man should have been and sprinted to the line to get the second try. With both converted the Horse had pulled the score back to 14-15 with ten minutes to play. The Horse pushed forward for the winner and eventually settled for a penalty, which Isaac Aitken scored to put them 17-15 up.
The Horse should have held on from there and some heroic defending kept Chesham out and eventually gave the Horse a penalty within their own 22. This penalty would have seen the ball in the Chesham half but Michael Fignon was ahead of the kicker and the play was pulled back for a Chesham penalty. A couple of plays later a penalty was given in front of the posts and the Chesham 10 kicked to win the game, 18-17.
Disappointment for the Horse but the plate is still up for grabs, with the semi final next weekend.
