In the welcome warmth of Spring sunshine, The Black Horse continued to show that, after the anus horribles that was February, everything is back to normal, namely forwards dominating their opposition, backs scoring at will and Neil McDonald getting wanker of the match. After narrowly beating Southgate earlier in the season it was expected that this fixture would be a tough one and so it turned out, at least for the first half.
For the second week running Horse were playing on a pitch of dimensions most suited to their game, the narrowness favouring their forward strength but proving tricky to judge clearance kicking which invariably went straight to touch for play to be brought back.
The visitors edged possession during the first half but were outscored as Southgate edged it on territory, turning half time at 19 points to 12 in front - The Horse points courtesy of back row play, firstly from Breezy scoring a try converted by Animal and secondly from Animal scoring an unconverted try after a passing move involving Breezy and Chris.
It was disappointing that despite all the huff and puff, The Horse were behind at half time and it took some captain motivation from Animal, namely reminding everyone that we were playing for the tour beer fund from the Honours Table, oh yeah, also finishing top of the league was mentioned, to raise the effort levels and it worked. The second half was a blitz of points scored as Southgate's forward efforts finally succumbed to the dominance of Horse in the set piece, especially in the line out and the backs began to work through those moves they always seem to practice before the match.
In 40 minutes of play The Horse racked up a point a minute to score 40 points courtesy of 4 tries from outstanding running from Isaac, a deserved first try of the season for Tony, another try from Breezy and a further 5 conversions from Animal, 3 of which were from the touchline to make up for the one he missed in front of the posts, continuing his recent good kicking form since changing tee!!
After the highest points tally of the season from the Horse there is just one game to go in the league, a much anticipated showdown against the cocks from Harpenden, before meeting Southgate again in the cup.
Supporters (much appreciated): Sean Best, Dave Duncan
MOM: Isaac, for tearing Southgate a new one and continuously rampaging through their defence on numerous occasions to score his four tries as he closed to within one of Animal's scoring record this season.....and in so doing has somewhat hampered his prospects of selection in the forthcoming games!!
WOM: Neil McDonald holding on tightly to what historically has always been his award, but this time selected by the opposition, despite only being on the pitch for ten minutes, which is ten minutes more than when he won it last week.
