Hard Fought win for Black Horse in awful conditions

Away at Southgate was always going to be a tough game for the Black Horse and with heavy rain all day the conditions were not going to help. The Horse though turned up with a strong side and after two victories last season against Southgate were in positive mood.

The game started as suspected, handling errors and players slipping were a common sight in the first ten minutes. It quickly became clear that the game was for the forwards and all four wingers, already soaked through, were in for a long game. Black Horse got on the score sheet after about 20 minutes, some good work up the pitch leading to a penalty, scored by Isaac Aitken. Southgate then came back at the Black Horse and whilst Rob Scrimshaw was injured on the floor, they took a quick penalty to leave the score 3-5.

The Horse immediately went back on the attack and a wonderful kick through from Adrian Lee was duly chased down by Dan Astarita and touched down to give the Horse their first try of the game. Isaac Aitken converted to put the Horse in the lead. The Horse could have extended their lead in the last ten minutes of the first half but two missed penalties from Isaac Aitken could not move the score board on (Even with Aaron Douglas trying to assist his fellow Kiwi). There was still time for Southgate to score a drop goal to leave the score 10-8 at half time.

The second half started quickly for the Black Horse and within 5 minutes they had another score, a second penalty for Isaac Aitken moving the score board to 13-8. The next twenty minutes was all Southgate, as the Black Horse defended resolutely in their own half, clearing their lines each time for Southgate to come right back at them. With Southgate 1m from the try line with 5 minutes to go the game was destined for a draw but some great kicking from Isaac Aitken saw the Horse up the pitch (aided by an unfortunate Soouthgate accidental offside).

With a line out on the 5m line the Horse smelled blood. Aaron Paea collected the line out and made some ground and then the ball eventually found Adrian Lee from 7m to score and put the game beyond Southgate. Another Isaac Aitken conversion put the final score at 20-8 to the Black Horse. A well deserved win for the Black Horse who defended expertly all game
