Search for first win continues

Blackpool's search for their first league win of the season continued as they lost out to Liverpool outfit Crosby St Marys. The home side were hit with a number of late withdrawals to their squad including losing one player to injury during the pre-match warm up which forced the team into a number of positional changes.

The game started poorly for Blackpool as they quickly fell behind to a barge over try from the visitors, but they soon hit back as powerful carries from Greg Jones, Keiron Taziker and Pete Wilkinson forced Crosby into conceding a penalty which was duly dispatched by Hugh Sweeney. After this blistering opening the match settled down into a more measured pace with both sides trying to gain control of the contest. Blackpool's task was made significantly tougher as firstly they lost Dave Collett to a leg injury and he was quickly followed to the sidelines by Tom Sanderson with a blood injury, forcing the team to form a very make shift backline.

In spite of this reshuffle, the home side almost scored as quick hands released Ben Kirkman down the flank only for the winger to be denied by a great last ditch tackle from the St Marys fullback. The visitors made the most of this reprieve and fashioned a well worked try of their own just before the break to hold a 10 – 3 lead at the interval.

The second stanza began disastrously for the hosts as they conceded a try from the kick off and this was followed minutes later with another score for the visitors leaving Blackpool trailing 24 – 3. After this awful opening to the half, Blackpool managed to regain a foothold in the game as excellent defence from Antony Clark, Adam Glover and Harry Gregory prevented Crosby from extending their lead further, whilst great work at the breakdown from the likes of Chris Parlour, Oliver Twyford and Joe Dodd saw the hosts establish good field position.

The home side's renewed efforts soon paid dividends as barnstorming runs from Wayne Daws, George Hunt and Luke Crosbie took them within touching distance of the Crosby tryline and set the platform for Leon Mason to squeeze over the whitewash with Sweeney adding the goal for a 24 – 10 scoreline. Unfortunately this was as close as Blackpool would get as fatigue began to take it's toll and Crosby crossed for two further scores to complete a 38 – 10 victory.
