With new management at the helm and nine new names in the starting eleven Lloyd Burton and Jan Czarnecki, recently at PNS, certainly were determined to bring about a wind of change at the Lincoln Road ground this weekend. Charged with getting Stones dislodged from the second to bottom spot in the UCL Division One and safely away from relegation from the league, they had 22 games to work their magic.
The new line up and shape looked sharp, and they passed the ball confidently around the park, Neves and Conteh looked at ease on the ball and commanded the midfield. Gargan, back at Stones, harried and disrupted the visiting defence as Stones pushed and probed in search of an opening, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 11-minutes, as Stones pushed forward a lapse of defensive discipline allowed a lone striker to work himself some space and break through the back four and put the ball in the back of the Stones net. This Stones side did not panic and resumed their game plan but at the half time whistle were still trailing by one goal.
The second half started with Stoned controlling the pace of the game and limiting West Bridgford to few opportunities, and those they got were delt with by the defence and Peverell in goal. Stones’ discipline now paid off when Wilson pounced on a loose ball in the centre of the park and drove forward towards the right of the goal, then pulling his cross back across the goal face, where Chambers thumped the ball past the keeper. Stones now looked totally at ease as they passed and moved the ball around, forcing the visitors to chase shadows, but it took until the 72nd minutes for Stones to grab all three points when a floated cross from the right was met by the head of Gargan and at first it looked like the keeper had dealt with it only for the ball to squirm under his body and into the net. A winning start, long may it continue.
