Bodmin 36-17 Camborne School of Mines

Saturday saw last seasons Cornwall Two promoted teams lock horns in a thrilling and fast paced encounter. As was the case last season Bodmin came out on top but not without being forced to fight for the entire of the eighty minutes.

Bodmin got off to a good start when following a quick lineout, fed to Mark Trevarthen, saw the fly half brought down just a couple of metres short of the try line. After Bodmin recycled the ball well, space was created on the wing for Ryan Jenkin to fend off the covering defence and touch down for the first score of the day. Opposite winger Cody Armstrong added the conversion.

Last seasons contests between year two sides often provided a roller coaster ride and this season seemed like it would be no different as School of Mines were quick to strike back with three points. Bodmin penalised for offside trying to close down the visiting attack.

School of Mines then struck once more to take the lead as a missed tackle in midfield saw the Students fly half score under the posts. The conversion was added to see School of Mines 10-7 up with twenty minutes gone.

Bodmin, cheered on by an abundant home support, responded well though. Maintaining possession well and working hard to gain territory the Clifden Park side regained the lead as they clinically finished off some effective phase play for Lee Taylor to cross the whitewash. The conversion was pushed just wide.

With just two points separating the sides, Bodmin searched to extend their lead and following an impressive counter attack from full back Dan Pooley and some big carries from second row Jon Day, the ball was worked wide to loosehead prop Andy Trevarthen who just managed to squeeze into the corner for an unconverted try. The half time whistle came and Bodmin lead 17-10.

School of Mines seemed determined to learn from previous games against Bodmin and looked like they would reduce the deficit as they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. The kick bounced back off the posts though and after a frantic scramble into Bodmin hands to clear.

The home side aware of their reprieve marched to the opposite end of the pitch before Bodmin's incredibly dominant scrum set up perfect ball for Mark Trevarthen to tee up Seb Williams on a fantastic line to cruise to the try line. The conversion was pushed wide.

Bodmin's scrum continued to dominate their visitors and set up a wonderful platform at will. With this set piece becoming increasingly influential Bodmin worked their way into the School of Mines half. A few quick phases with well rucked ball saw Lee Taylor given the ball on the wing for the Number 8 to goose step his way to the train line. Armstrong added the extras from out wide to give Bodmin a 3 score lead.

The Students with ball in hand had caused problems for Bodmin and when a penalty in the Bodmin 22 was quickly tapped the School of Mines Number 8 fed his openside into a gap to go under the posts and reduce the arrears.

Bodmin sealed the game though with five minutes to go as a training ground move from the back of the scrum saw Ollie Wendon feed scrum half Scott Helgesen who in turn put Jenkin on the outside of his opposite number to dive over the line and wrap up a brilliant bonus point win. Armstrong added the touchline conversion for some extra gloss as well.

Having won their opening two fixtures Bodmin travel to Perranporth on Saturday (3pm) keen to carry on their successful start to the season.
