10 Men Rocks Lose To Hampton & Ricmond
By David Seabourne
Sami El-Abd Sent Off
The Rocks fell to another narrow defeat as an 85th minute goal was enough to secure three points for Hampton at the Beveree.
Bognor were unchanged as they lined up against these high flyers who had struggled in the league recently at home.
Max Kretzschmar’s early cross had to be scooped out by Sami El-Abd after Josh Casey’s throw in.
Then Manny Adebowale’s throw fell to Richard Gilot who knocked it forward but it bounced out of play.
Soon after Brendan Kiernan’s cross was plucked out of the sky by Dan Lincoln with Shaun Jeffers in pursuit on 8 minutes.
Good work on the left by Kristian Campbell saw him find Jimmy Muitt who cut inside before shooting low and forcing goalkeeper Will Henry into a fine save down to his right at the near post.
Ollie Pearce was denied with his long range effort with his left boot but his attempt was easily saved on 11 minutes.
Pearce then beat the goalkeeper with his touch sending it towards goal but Casey just got there at the near post to hook it off the line. This came before Pearce's freekick was headed over the bar off the defensive wall.
Adebowale gave the ball away to Bradley Hudson-Odoi who got it down the left before crossing into the box but Jeffers headed wide under pressure from El-Abd on 16 minutes.
Hudson-Odoi curled another cross in from the right and it was Jeffers that got on the end of Kiernan’s headed flick to see Lincoln tip it over the bar on 29 minutes.
Doug Tuck couldn't quite get there in a passing move before Wynter’s cross was cancelled out by Lincoln.
Then Pearce won a freekick far out on the left. But Muitt's kick flew out of touch on 26 minutes.
The ball was well brought down by Kiernan who found Jeffers with a good pass. He ran in between defence before shooting low but thankfully for Bognor, straight at Lincoln.
A long ball down the right flank saw Muitt run onto it. His cross saw Henry dive down in his area to divert it away before Pearce eventually turned to shoot on the rebound but again the goalkeeper was equal to it on 32 minutes.
Hudson-Odoi’s pass across the box fell to Jeffers, who like Pearce earlier on, took time before turning to shoot. This time though Jeffers blasted the ball over the crossbar with his left foot.
Bognor won a freekick but Pearce's cross was confidently saved by Henry in the air with El-Abd sliding in as well.
Bognor won a corner on 42 minutes. Pearce's kick found El-Abd but he headed it wide in a positive display from Bognor in the first half.
Things changed dramatically in the second as Bognor rarely threatened. Adebowale lost it in defence allowing Shaun McAuley in but his shot was feeble and easily saved by Lincoln.
El-Abd committed a foul just outside the box. Kretzschmar stepped up but slammed his strike into the wall and then he ran the ball out of play on the rebound.
Gilot won the ball cleanly on the right but his pass inside to Tommy Block ended with the midfielder's low strike being denied by the goalkeeper on 55 minutes.
Campbell got booked for holding the ball up on 59 minutes before Kiernan’s cross was only just headed wide by Hudson-Odoi from the freekick. McAuley then nodded over from a left sided cross soon after as Hampton played down the slope in the second half.
Kiernan scuppered a real opportunity as Bognor failed to clear their lines on 62 minutes as he scuffed his cross over the bar unmarked.
Harry Crawfird replaced Hudson-Odoi for Hampton on 66 minutes.
McAuley slid in late from behind on Tuck and deserved his yellow card on 68 minutes.
Tuck got the ball on the attack and then found Pearce but his dipping shot was denied from the edge of the box by Henry.
Shandon Baptite came on for James Mulley for the Beavers on 69 minutes.
Casey’s cross found Kretzschmar just inside the area but it was his header that spun wide on 71 minutes.
Wynter's cross from the right picked out Crawford who nodded it off the crossbar and then El-Abd as well as Adebowale were brave to get in the way of two shots on the rebound. Three Hampton players all missed a great chance from a corner shortly after.
Kiernan then followed up a throw in with an explosive strike straight off the crossbar again as Lincoln got something on it.
Campbell was deemed to have handled the ball to block a cross before the corner and resulting shots on goal were blocked off by the Rocks defence again.
Muitt's cross was cleared out as far as Gilot but his strike from distance was well saved in uneventful second half from a Bognor point of view.
On 85 minutes a two-footed challenge by Wynter on Campbell went unnoticed before Hampton scored. Bognor failed to clear their lines as the hosts got the ball back inside the box before Jeffers turned the ball low into the net.
Ben Swallow and Ibra Sekajja replaced Gilot and Pearce on 86 minutes.
Michael Kamara came on for Jack Cook for the hosts on 87 minutes after a leg injury.
Tuck couldn't clear it as Baptiste got it forward before Crawford spun a shot well wide.
It got worse for Bognor as El-Abd got shown a straight red card for a leading elbow in the air during a challenge as frustrations showed at the end for the visitors.
The final whistle blew after five minutes of stoppage time.
The Rocks now must look ahead to St Albans at Nyewood Lane next Saturday 3rd March, 3pm kick off as they continue their fight to avoid relegation continues.
