Thom and Sam Kellogg made one change from the historical victory in the week away at Belper Town with new signing Stephen Akers coming in for the unlucky Deesh Lehal. Deesh has done a sterling job in recent games playing out of position and working his socks off for the team so this was not an easy decision. Deesh has certainly proved after coming up from the reserves that having a positive attitude and desire to work hard gets its rewards.
This game was played in very testing conditions, with a heavy pitch and very powerful wind blowing straight down the pitch from the Joe Kellogg memorial stand end. Going with the wind Borrowash soon gained a grip on the game and penned the visitors in, creating opportunities to score but a lack of composure or clinical decision making was proving a headache. Barrow also played their part and with a much changed side and new manager were also dangerous on the break and forced a few corners. However with centre halves Kane Jellyman and Tom Land, after a run of form that wasn’t up to scratch, finally getting back to near their best and defending properly, there were very few scares.
Borrowash finally took the lead when a weak Jamie Pawley free kick was spilled by the goalkeeper and Stephen Akers pounced to fire in the rebound to make a dream start to his debut. From then on it should have been more but The Vics could only claim one after a good move involving break up play by Sam Kellogg and good play by Stephen Akers feeding the run of Dave Leigh who scored a fantastic shot from all of 25 yards which this time was unstoppable.
Half time – 2-0.
The second half against the wind was pretty much a formality for Vics who controlled throughout and again played some nice stuff for the conditions. The third goal, and killer one as far as Barrow were concerned, came from a expertly delivered corner by David Hind which was powerfully headed home by joint player manager Sam Kellogg. The game was now effectively over and Borrowash were in complete control and a fourth was inevitable and again a great run and finish by debutant Stephen Akers, who if he keeps up this form will prove an excellent signing.
Also nice to see the progression of reserve team lads such as Scott Staniland and Deesh Lehal who have come in and done fine jobs!
Full time – 4-0.
Side – Smith , Leigh, Land, Jellyman, Staniland, King, Kellogg (S), Akers, Pawley, Frost, Hind. Subs – Kellogg (T), Baker, Betteridge (T), Mitchell, Lehal.
Managers view
An excellent display against a much improved Barrow side who came here ,as most do, with nothing to lose so we knew we couldn’t slip up and become arrogant following the midweek win at Belper. New signing Stef Frost and Stephen Akers have come in like a breath of fresh air and should prove to be key parts of our side. We look strong in most departments with players still to come back and with Tom Betteridge and Lee Mitchell back in the squad today following injury and illnesses we will certainly have selection headaches in the coming weeks.
The only worry today was a nasty injury to Jamie Pawley’s ankle following an unpunished tackle from behind which we await results following a hospital visit today.
