An even contest in difficult conditions

On a day when handling the ball in the wet and windy conditions was never going to be easy two well matched teams played out a highly entertaining and spirited match. Neither side were able to impose themselves on the game in the early exchanges but it was Moderns who were first to score as Lowther went over near to the posts following a series of rucks close to the Boston line. With a successful conversion Boston were 7-0 down Boston started to put together a passing game and work their way down the pitch against the elements. With Boston going close to scoring a couple of times the Moderns defence was finally broken when a quick tapped penalty saw a strong run from Adenaike on the right wing halted 5 metres from the line. Good support from the forwards saw the possession quickly recycled to the left for winger Wood to get Boston`s first try.

Boston, playing with the wind, soon took the lead in the second half as they stole the ball from a Modern`s lineout on halfway. Slick passing along the line put fullback Balsom into space and he outsprinted the defence to give Boston a 10-7 lead. Fly half Tom Andrews started to get his kicking game going and pin Moderns in their own half. Modern`s tackling held firm and they worked hard to turn defence into attack as a strong run in midfield lead to their second try and they retook the lead by 12 points to 10 with 15 minutes left. Boston realised that they needed to turn pressure into points and a long range penalty kick from Andrews gave Boston the lead 13-12 and then another sweeping move along the backline allowed Balsom to score his second try and secure the match for Boston 18-12.
