Boston's Rugby League team, the Boston Buccaneers, entertained a team from Royal Air Force Waddington on Thursday evening for a valuable pre season ma

Although the Buccaneers lost the match much was learnt in this their first ever game. Prior to the game Coach Mark Bean named Marc Miles and Johnny Ledger as captain and vice captain respectively.

Buccaneers opened the scoring within 4 minutes as Deano Dean offloaded to youngster Aaron Evison to touch down in the corner. There then followed a lengthy spell of powerfully running by the Waddington outfit, coupled with handling errors this saw the Buccaneers down 22-4 at the half. Despite the score line the Buccaneers maintained pressure only being denied at the last minute by a strong defence. The Buccaneers were forced to defend for long periods and seemed to relish the task with massive hits put in by Captain Marc Miles.

The second half started brightly with the Buccaneers offloading in the tackle and spreading the ball wide. After some strong running by Ed Horwell and John Stanfield , George Baldwin sprinted for the corner. This score seemed to lift the inexperienced Boston team. Deano Dean and Will Scupham made some powerful breaks and it wasn't long before Will Scupham scythed through the Waddington defence scoring under the posts. Some text book defending resulted in the Buccaneers turning over the ball. Lee Davies and Johnny Ledger combined well to release Tom Andrews who was again tackled just short of the line. A kick through by Adam 'flip flop' Flintham was almost touched down by Liam Atkin but was adjudged to have been grounded. Another turnover close to the line gave Adam Flintham the chance to duck under tackles to score under the post and convert his own try to bring the score to 28-20.

After a prolonged period of Buccaneers dominance Waddington upped their game and made some great breaks scoring 3 quick tries to kill off any hope the home team had in winning.

Coach and captain both agreed that there we many positives to be taken away from the game as well as some points for the training field.

The season starts with an away fixture v Derby City on 14th June.
