"Cold, wet, muddy and windy"

Rugby at its best...

On Sunday, in cold, wet, muddy and windy conditions, Bournville u14s played Bromsgrove at home. Although Bournville had already beaten Bromsgrove once this season, this time round it was going to be a lot harder as Bournville were significantly down on players, meaning they had a less experienced front row, full back, scrumhalf and no subs.

The first few minutes were closely fought with both teams making good tackles and turning the possession over. However, Bromsgrove managed to find a gap in the Bournville defence and their centre made a clean line break to score under the post after about five minutes of play. Bournville came back at them with Henry Hayes and Fin Ellis making good tackles in defence to contain Bromsgrove and then putting a great shift in at the breakdowns to turn the ball over. However, Bromsgrove were a lot quicker at getting to the breakdowns and therefore quickly regained possession leading to two successive converted tries. At 21-0 Bournville looked to already be out of the game however they didn’t drop their heads and, after a great passage of play down the right wing that led to Bournville scrum, Fin Ellis scored from a pick and go in the far right corner.

Bromsgrove continued to dominate the weakened Bournville side but outstanding defence and cover tackles by Dylan Price throughout the game made it harder for them to score. However, with the mentality of the rest of the team dropping and with Bromsgrove’s strong attack mounting the pressure, by half time the score was 36-5 to Bromsgrove.

The second half was more of the same with impressive attack from Bromsgrove and poor defence from Bournville. However, near the end of the game Bournville did start to pressure Bromsgrove trying to push for a final consolation try. But after five minutes inside the

Bromsgrove 22, Bournville couldn’t find a way past the strong and organised Bromsgrove defence. The ball was then turned over and kicked out to touch by Bromsgrove to end a disappointing game for the Bournville lads. Well played to Bromsgrove for being such an impressive opposition and for their great sportsmanship.

Onto tour next week with almost a full squad where hopefully Bournville can step up their game and play the great rugby that they often do.
