Bourns pre-season program began as the squad took 28 players to take on National 2 South side Bournmouth. Several of our newest players took to the field as the game featured 2 x 30 minute sessions and a final 20 minute play, giving everybody at least two sessions of game time.
It was clear from the off that this was going to be a highly competitive encounter with both sides challenging each other with ferocious tackling and breakdown play. The first session saw one try a piece with the Bourns score coming right at the end of the session by flanker Angus Low. The line out was won and the backs punched a hole. Quick ball saw Angus hit a line and sprint around the full-back for a 7-5 lead.
The second session was a try fest as both sides created opportunities from positive play at pace. Bourns increased their lead with a classic catch and drive after a turn over penalty had been won. Flanker Ashley Scrivens burrowed over. The sides swapped tries as winger Alton McVey finished off a crisp move in the backs. Tries were swapped again with number 8 Umran Jadwat finishing off a fine line break by second row Tom Holliday. That left the score 26-19 at the end of the second session.
The third session saw two tries to the hosts, one carved out by the excellent stand off for the centre to benefit and a break out 70 meters out by the winger after Bourns got turned over deep in the opposition 22. So 31-26 to the home team, but a massive amount of positives to take forward.
Next up is Friday night lights on Friday 16th August when another Nat 2 side are the opposition in the form of Luctonians who visit Averyfields. Details to be published in due course. The final warm up will see near neighbours Dudley Kingswinford visit Averyfields on Saturday 31st August. Again details to follow. The season begins in Midlands Premier the following week as Bourns host South Leicester with a 3 pm kick off.
