Another good festival showing

Bournville U12s continue to showcase their great offense and penchant for the "not quite"
There was much excitement this Sunday (from the coaches) as after years of playing in the, always good, Sutton Festival we made it to our last one and made it to the coveted pitch in front of the clubhouse. Closer than ever to the Breakfast Baps, BBQ and Refreshments! It was always destined therefore to be a good day.
Despite having to start with only 11 as timings seemed tighter than anticipated, the U12s produced an excellent performance against Sutton Coldfield in their first match. Hard running combined with excellent handling and support play saw the boys tear in to the opposition with relish and stretch out to an early lead. However Sutton Coldfield were determined hosts and started to make their tackles and frustrate. It was only when an interception turned in to a length of the pitch try did we finally feel comfortable as 3-1 winners. However we were all pleased with what was a good start that boded well.
Next up were Stourbridge who we have gotten to know well during festival season. They are a good team and we knew how they were going to play but unfortunately we could not always deal with their powerful runners as we would like. However this was a great game of rugby from 2 evenly matched sides and the boys should be proud of the shift they put in for a 2-1 scoreline that went in favour of Stourbridge.
Then on to Lichfield. Another quality team performance (with a standout performance from our Lichfield educated resident!) resulted in a good win, setting us up for the plate semi against Sutton’s other team.
Despite a long break and perhaps too much of a chance to kick back, again the U12s went for it and took apart Sutton in both defence and attack in what was perhaps our performance of the day.
And so we arrived finally at the plate final.
Despite all the boys pointing out Old Sil’s star player and knowing how he played we failed to deal with him and went down 3-0 early in the first half. Typically this is the recipe for heads dropping but instead we started to play and scored a great team try at the end of the 1st half to give ourselves some belief. A tougher Bournville side then came out of the blocks in the second half and brought the score back to 3-2 and were hammering away at the tryline when the whistle went. The Stourbridge side we played in the pool went on to triumph in the cup but Old Sils were as good as anyone we played all day and a this was a very good result. We ended up being only a knock on away from at least sharing the plate.
So another good festival came to an end for us.
The U12s brand of attacking rugby can be a thing of beauty when it goes well, but we can also be guilty of overplaying when simplicity would be best. There were perhaps a few too many miss-passes, when what we needed was quicker straighter running. In one phase we made 10m forward but about 200m laterally. We shouldn’t cut out the ambition, but you need to play the right game in the right areas. Having said that, it was a good day at the office and the boys can again hold their heads high as a quality rugby team.
