We are very pleased to be able to formally announce the appointment of James Herbert as Senior Head Coach for Braintree Rugby Club.

James came to rugby as a student of Sawston College, but stopped playing on leaving due to work commitments. He was persuaded into returning to the game by a friend, and joined Sawston Rugby Club, whom he Captained to a League and County Cup double in 2007. During this time James was also Lead Coach for Sawston. The following season he moved to Shelford, where unfortunately he suffered a career ending injury which led to his retirement from the field.
Missing the game, he decided to continue with coaching, which has been his main focus now for over 10 years, both at Youth and Senior levels.
More recently he has coached at London Division 1 side Shelford, where he was 2nd XV Coach, 1st XV Forwards/Defence Coach, 1st XV Video Analysis Coach and latterly 1st XV Coach. In addition, he was 1st and 2nd XV Player Development Coach, working towards getting Youth players to fulfil their potential in Senior rugby. Alongside his duties at Shelford, he has recently been Eastern Counties U17/ U18 Head Coach. In addition, he was brought in by Cambridge RUFC in order to develop players on the verge of 1st XV rugby on a one-to-one basis. We feel that his experience in coaching Seniors at a higher level, and also his experience in the development of young players and bringing them into the senior game will be invaluable to us.
Given the COVID-19 virus, and the huge impact it has had on our daily lives and of course rugby, we have been aware that there have been more serious issues to deal with. However, with James’ obvious enthusiasm for the task in hand, we are now keen for his appointment to become official, so that as soon as the time is right, he can meet up with the other coaches, Captains, and of course players.
Hopefully we will be able to get back to rugby soon, and I am sure you will all join me in welcoming James to our great Braintree Rugby Club.
