BRAINTREE…33 BASILDON…0 (London 3 Essex)

THE BLACK and ambers continued their winning start to 2020 with a five-try mauling of bottom club Basildon.

Tree’s victory keeps them in fourth place in London 3 Essex and still in the promotion hunt, but they made hard work of it in the Robbswood mud.

A try and conversion from winger Elliott Swallow was all the hosts had to show for their first half efforts as they turned around 7-0 to the good.

Basildon’s tactics of slowing the game down led to numerous stoppages and prevented Jamie Clarke’s men from achieving any fluidity in their play.

But they ramped things up in the second half and gave themselves breathing space courtesy of a penalty try awarded for constant infringements by the visitors.

That opened the floodgates for Tree with Swallow adding a second try and further scores from number eight Cam Kerr and inside centre Josh Levy.

Leading scorer Swallow also kicked three further conversions to bring his personal points haul in the game to 16 points.

Head Coach Clarke said: “It was a dour game for long periods but we got the win our efforts deserved.

“We were dominating the set piece and ensuring the lion’s share of the possession but we weren’t able to convert that into points in the first half.

“The second half started much the same with the game unable to flow due to constant stoppages as Basildon slowed everything down.

“It all became a bit of an arm wrestle and with 20 minutes to go we still needed three more tries to ensure a bonus point win.

“Luckily we finally snapped into life and a quick 15-minute purple patch enabled us to finally open them up and score the points we needed.

“We had to make seven changes to the side we fielded the previous game and I think that showed in our early play.

“We were guilty of not making the most of our dominance in both territory and possession, but we got the job done in the end.”

Tree are back in London 3 Essex action this weekend when they travel to Brentwood to face ninth-placed Mavericks.
