BRAINTREE…24 CAMPION…15 (London 3 Essex)
BATTLING Braintree remain in fourth place in London 3 Essex after they returned to winning ways with a home victory over Romford side Campion on Saturday.
Tries from Dan Olley, Charlie Marsden, Charlie Fairchild and Jack Lee and two conversions from Tyler Worster were enough to seal the points for Tree.
The black and ambers can feel content with their efforts on a blustery day at Robbs Wood where the conditions hampered hopes of any champagne rugby.
BRUFC Head Coach Jamie Clarke said: “The conditions were really tough for both sides and it was always going to turn into a battle.
“Both sides were trying to dominate the contact area and it got messy at times but I thought we played the conditions really well, especially in the second half.
“It wasn’t a day for free flowing rugby and we had to adjust our game plan accordingly but our physicality earned us the win.
“I was proud of the boys. They gave everything they had, particularly young scrum-half Kian Culham for a man of the match display on his debut.”
The win came at the end of a week that saw Braintree youngster Tristan Smith selected for the England Under-18 Rugby Development Squad.
Tristan, who has been with Tree since the age of eight and has progressed through the age groups ever since, will attend a training camp at Bisham Abbey in February.
In the last two years he has played for Tree’s successful Club Academy team as well as Felsted School 1st XV and Saracens Under-18 Academy.
Nigel Brand, BRUFC Academy Head Coach said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Tristan the club and the academy.
“It shows that success can be achieved with hard work, effort and dedication. We wish Tristan well in his future rugby career.”
Tree return to London 3 Essex action this weekend when they travel down to east London to face Upminster.
