The more sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle!

Match 1: Sudbury 5 Braintree 0
Sudbury started strongly with early pressure resulting in a try before Braintree had woken up! From the restart Braintree came back strongly with some excellent rucking from Josh and Jake. Sudbury though punished Braintree every time contact was made without protecting the ball (even though we’ve been learning this at training!) and frequently ripped the ball from Braintree hands in the tackles. On 2 such occasions Braintree were saved from certain tries with strong tackles from Will and Tyler who took man and ball into touch as the Sudbury winger went over the line. Desperate defence from Rhys and Ethan was not enough to stop another Sudbury try. From the restart Braintree through Connor drove straight at the heart of the Sudbury defence and following quickly rucked ball and good hands from Harvey were unlucky not to score right at the end of the half. In the second half both Jack and Tyler made surging runs but it was again the well drilled Sudbury team that ripped the ball from tackles and showed the value of passing along the line to score 2 quick tries. Tackling and support got better throughout the game but was too late to avoid defeat and a final Sudbury try.

Match 2: Sudbury 6 Braintree 3

By far the best game of the day with both teams passing the ball well and tackling strongly. The Sudbury team again started well and scored before Braintree had touched the ball (a common theme!). Braintree came straight back passed the ball out to their winger Teddy who ran strongly before being bundled into touch. Braintree tackled well and won good ball allowing Thomas and Alex to run hard and straight at Sudbury’s defence. However against the run of play Sudbury managed to turn over the ball and score 2 quick tries. Braintree responded immediately with Jennifer scoring a try whilst carrying 2 Sudbury players on her back! So half time and kept to 3-1 after a flying try saving tackle from Lukas and a tackle from Jennifer that knocked the ball out of the hands of a Sudbury player with the line beckoning. Braintree began 2nd half strongly, camping on the Sudbury line before pressure resulted in a Braintree penalty 5 metres out. The look in Ciaron’s eyes left little doubt about what was going to happen next and he duly took the ball from the first pass at full speed and crashed over for a well deserved try. From the restart Braintree won the ball back and a series of passes and great support across the back line, helped by the glue like hands of Alistair, ended with Dominic scoring a fantastic try in which the whole team must have been involved. Somewhere in the middle of all this Sudbury must have scored another 3 tries but Braintree left the pitch with their heads held high.

Match 3: Sudbury 1 Braintree 5

After the coaches inspiring team talk Braintree at last started the game on top. Improved passing and support led to Will being bundled into touch near the Sudbury line. Connor then stole line out against the throw (twice!) resulting in Harvey cutting inside and scoring. Shortly after the restart fast rucking allowed Jack to pick up from the base and go through for another try. With more possession than in previous games Braintree were able to attempt a few moves and following a scissors move (almost off the training ground!) Tyler scored. Half time arrived and by now the waterboy had got the hang of things and arrived on the half way line with perfect timing! The second half continued in the same way with this time Harvey going for a double dummy and pass to Rhys on the wing. After an initial fumble he then took the ball on, set up a ruck and Tyler ran hard for another score. The forwards were looking for some of the action too and Josh and Oliver were both unlucky when held up close to the line, Oliver with half of the opposition team on his back. (Paul who scored 5th try??? Can’t read my writing as rain smudged it!!) (Sorry I can’t remember, I was too busy running up and down the touchline like a headless chicken, was there a game going on???) All in all a much better game with much more passing and more tackling.

Match 4: Sudbury 10 Braintree 0

As the score suggests by this time Braintree were a little weary and looking forward to their hot dogs. However right to the end nobody gave up with tackle after tackle going in against Sudbury’s strongest team. Highlights included tackles from Will on either side of the pitch in quick succession, another tackle by Jennifer resulting in a player losing the ball and a scrum that never stopped trying against the formidable Sudbury front row.

Player of the day – Oliver who played with such heart and most importantly had fun. Always wanted the ball and never gave up.

Special mentions for Alistair “glue hands” and Alex who ran straight and hard with great determination all day. And Lawrence of course for another faultless refereeing display!

Learning for the day:

Remember what you’ve been coached guys! When we stopped presenting the ball to the opposition in the tackle, threw the ball around, tackled low and concentrated on rucking rather than mauling (all things we’ve been taught in training) we looked like a good team who can do us proud over the next few weeks at the festivals.
