Playing on Chelmsfords training pitch was always going to be tricky this time of year - the ref needs to be commended for keeping an eye on safety and moving scrums to the few patches of grass and out of the knee deep mud when necessary.
What followed was a good game of rugby between two competitive sides - Chelmsford (depleted of players in key positions) showing some real tenacity against our bigger pack in the scrum and in open play.
That said, it was massively pleasing to see the boys put what we have been doing in training, into practice on the pitch. Our rucking and tackling led by James Abraham and Lewis Couttie were excellent, but most enjoyable was seeing our backs linking together for some lovely running lines, being well marshaled by our 9 and Mackenzie Singleton (without a hair out of place) at 10, with new player Harvey (all 6ft 3 of him)being a bit of a find at 12.
All in all, a good performance, bits and pieces to work on but a nice game to head into Christmas with.
A special thanks to the Chelmsford coaches - they were very welcoming and made sure their team played in the right spirit, with excellent refereeing.
