He was born in Farnborough and began his career with Woking as a centre-half. In 1956 he signed for Chelsea where he was a first team regular until joining QPR in 1965.

As a manager he had spells with Portsmouth and overseas with Benefica (two spells where he twice won the Portugese league and cup), Belenenses and Real Betis. In between these stints he had a long association with Southampton as assistant manager.

John was much liked and well respected and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are very much with his wife Mary and their family at this sad time.
