Jack Petchey Leader Award for top Coach Arran Smith & Achievements for young Eels players David Baker and Rhys Cotter

Arran Smith

Using words from boys who have nominated him:

"He has been my coach at Brentwood Eels for the last 4 years. He has shown a real dedication and passion for the sport and has helped many boys including myself to reach their full potential in the game. I currently have a sponsorship at the London Broncos and it was Arran that inspired me and helped me to achieve this dream."

"Arran goes above and beyond for us. He spends a lot of his own personal time in organising training and matches and trips up north and in Europe. Brentwood Eels would be lost without Arran."

This is the general consensus across the team. Arran has done an amazing job as a coach - not only helping the boys to develop as rugby league players but also from boys into young men - During training and in matches you can feel the respect the have players towards each other and their opponents and Arran has played a massive part in promoting this culture (which we are proud of and strive to keep going at Brentwood Eels) to his players. During a couple of years - when there was no league for the age group - Arran volunteered a lot of his own time creating and organising a merit league so that the boys wouldn't miss out. His passion for the sport and the respect and the concept of fair play he instils in the players is valued by players, parents and other coaches.

David Baker

David Baker 17, has been playing for the club since he was 10/11 years old and last year he completed the clubs pathway after playing for the open age, Rugby leagues Adult/senior format, He was then awarded rookie of the year by his fellow peers and coaches for his commitment and performance considering he was only 16 years of age through the season!

Throughout his time at the club - and currently - David (who is at an age where a lot of his peers are spending their leisure time outside of training and matches on leisure activities) has been giving his time helping the younger generation through coaching and encouraging them (and refereeing at primary and youth level) which has enabled a lot of youngsters to be able to play the game of rugby league and increase participation locally.

Within his own team he has inspired his teammates (some of whom are older than him) with his commitment both to the game and to his team with his willingness to always help and be available regardless of what else he has going on.

Rhys Cotter

Rhys joined the Eels only last year and was one of the youngest in his age group of Under 14's and when the new season come around he found himself loving rugby league as a sport and the club he played for he Eels but loathed the fact most of his age group had been moved up to the Under 16 level due to the way London Junior League split the age groups. So he took it upon himself to spread the word and get a team together to enjoy the sport he loved! The squad has now had around 35 players at training and playing games, In effect he has proactively created a team where without him there wouldn't have been one.

Rhys hard work usually shown on the field has been emulated off it and there is a great culture among the boys as they are building towards being one of the strongest outfits within their age group.

Rhys has not only made a change to these young lads playing careers but the difference this will make not only to the club in terms of producing young players but also to the sport as a whole as they go forward into London Broncos professional Scholarship and Academy.
