7th November 1942 - 18th December 2021

On the first Saturday of the 1971-2 season a young lad cradling, a pint after his first game for the club, was probably looking a little lost in a very crowded bar, when he was suddenly approached by one of those congregated in the area with an arm outstretched and said, "Hello, I am John Stevens Captain of Club, how did your game go today".

Therefore, all of those who have had a moan & a groan at me over the years can be partly blamed on him for remaining a member ever since.

John made an impression wherever he went.

He began his rugby at Cooper's school and went on to be 1 of 3 founding members of the Upminster Rugby Club.

On moving to Brentwood, he joined his local club and went on to become 1st team Captain between 1969-72.

He then moved up to Tring where he had a long career there as a player, captain, and then coach.

More importantly, this was the area where he decided to settle down and have a family, which brought about a new venture, which was junior rugby.

Again John was not just content with a minor role, he again excelled himself by going on to coach at Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable, and Kettering.

He also became very involved with both Bedfordshire & East Midlands mini/junior sections, before finally returning to Tring where he was instrumental in helping their Treasurer to sort out the club's finances.

John occasionally made it back to Brentwood and ironically was due to have attended the Memorial lunch held last November.

He will be sorely missed by many.

Our condolences go out to his daughter Carly, sons Nick & Matt, who provided background information, and also to grandchildren Daisy & Henry.

The funeral is to be held at Bierton Crematorium, Cane End Lane, Bierton, Aylesbury, HP22 5BH on Friday 14th January at 11.00 am.
