Fine win keeps Brentwood ahead of the pack

After last week’s disappointing loss away to CS Rugby, Brentwood had much to prove to themselves as they entertained lowly Harrow at King Georges on Saturday. The wet and windy weather was hardly going to see a fast free flowing game. Director of Rugby Steve Killington demanded more accuracy and urgency in his players if they were to remain as League leaders.

Harrow elected to play against the slope in the first half and Brentwood forwards took full advantage. Driving play from the forwards especially Skipper Josh Woodcock and Jamie Tavui punished the Harrow forwards. Joel Bevans- Royston burst the line to give the home supporters something to cheer about and also settle the nerves. Henry Bird who was to have an outstanding afternoon with the boot who added the conversion to give Brentwood a 7 -0 lead after 8 minutes.
The Brentwood forwards were proving far too strong for Harrow and from a ruck Henry Galligan released the Brentwood number 7 who skilfully released fly half Tom Simpson to score with Henry Bird converting the additional 2 points to increase the lead to 14-0.

The third try was again created by a front row combination of Keiran Skurr who is improving week by week, the dominant Lewis Pratley and a rejuvenated Terry Snooks who crashed over from close range to increase the lead with Henry Bird adding his third conversion of the afternoon to give Brentwood a 21-0 lead.

Harrow’s frustration emerged at the next breakdown when a yellow card was shown to the Harrow second row but Brentwood were unable to punish Harrow. Harrow’s woes continued as the Referee Luke Davies from London Society added a second Harrow player to the sin bin. However Harrow kept going and were rewarded with a penalty just on half time to reduce the deficit to 21-3. The half time break allowed a reshuffle as Jamie Tavui was replaced due to a serious shoulder injury.

In the second half with Brentwood playing into the wind and rain and also playing up the slope Harrow would have expected a greater share of the play but such was the dominance of the back row of Tom King, No 7, Billy Aldous and Nick Binet that Harrow were unable to gain a foothold in the Brentwood half. The use of quick ball in very poor and rapidly deteriorating conditions enabled Declan Gillett to canter in for the bonus point score to extend the lead to 26-3.

Harrow made few incursions into the Brentwood half but from a poor clearance kick in the Brentwood 22 Harrow charged it down and bundled over for a score wide out to give them 26-8 score line. With the weather worsening and the light fading Brentwood ran in 2 more tries from Scrum Half Henry Galligan and Ed Greenfield on the wing to secure a 38-8 victory.

Coaches Killington, Sproull and Buerkes were pleased with the afternoons work but all realise that the next few weeks will go a long way to defining the season as the Club will travel in good heart to Tring and then before Christmas Amersham and Chiltern, both clubs will be looking to bounce straight back to the National League.

The Chigwell Construction man of the match was given to Brentwood’s evergreen and improving number 7.
