Patience, scrum domination and slick hands were used to break down an organised and competitive Old Priorians on a blustery day side at King Georges and moved Brentwood up to 3rd in the league.

Playing against the slope and wind in the first half Brentwood started sluggishly and went 0-6 down after 10 minutes due to 2 penalties from Priorians fly-half Ross Mcintosh. With the away side spreading the field in defence Brentwood tried to break them down with chips, hard running and intricate backs play but had nothing to show for a full 10 minutes of play in and around the opposition’s 22 metre line. Josh Stannard went close but was stopped just short of the line, after some dangerous play in the ruck that followed, Old Priorians lost their fly-half for 10 minutes.
Stannard wasn’t to be denied from the scrum, running a lovely line and dotting down under the posts. 2 minutes later, Chay Pollinger found some space out wide and chipped over the top, Tom Simpson was at hand to collect it and score.
Both tries converted by Charlie Chambers and Brentwood had a 7-6 lead after 20 mins. Neither team dominated for the rest of the half, Old Priorians used the wind to kick 2 long range penalties to keep the score close at halftime.

Half time – Brentwood 14 – 12 Old Priorians

Things didn’t start well for Brentwood in the second half, from the kick off an Old Priorians player knocked on and Brentwood recovered the ball, the first pass was intercepted and the opposition centre won the foot race to touch down between the posts. Either the referee didn’t see the knock on or called for the end of advantage very quickly, either way a poor decision but with the easy conversion Brentwood found themselves behind again 14 – 19.
Undeterred, Brentwood pushed forward and dominated in virtually every facet of play, multiple scrums were won against the head and with the forwards gaining ground in both defence and attack Brentwood scored some lovely tries.
Following a powerful scrum, Charlie Chambers continued his scoring run with a try and conversion from out wide.

A powerful run from Paul Bradley which took 4 defender to stop opened up space which saw Chay Pollinger tackled just short of the line, quick hands gave captain Josh Woodcock some space and he used his pace to score a great team try out wide. Another followed soon after, a clearance kick was gathered by Pollinger, fed to Charlie Chambers who beat a couple of players and fed Charlie Wilkinson, Bradley Burr hit a gap in midfield and sent Pollinger down the line. Paul Bradley took a pass and showed great hands to pop the ball inside for George Bassenger to score, a real team effort that epitomised Brentwood’s play in the second half. 5 minutes later another example, good lineout ball from Bassenger fed the backs, Stannard hitting another good line and feeding Charlie Wilkinson who beat 3 players and got his reward for some good play in defence and attack, Chambers added the extras.
The forwards then showed what they could do with the ball, Ben Amato fed Bassenger who took the ball through a gap in midfield, fed Paul Bradley who showed a great dummy but was held up just short, Chambers was supporting and dotted the ball down for his second try. Brentwood were now completely dominant over a tiring Old Priorians side and Chambers unselfishly gave up the chance of a hat trick to give Wilkinson his second after beating 3 players from the 10 metre line. Just time for 1 more score, another powerful scrum, James White fed Burr whose well weighted cross field kick was collected by Pollinger for his second try.

The Davlav Man of the Match went to Tijde Visser, the only thing missing from his performance was a try, powerful scrummaging and a wrecking ball in attack and defence. Brentwood have a difficult away fixture next Sat 28th October against Eton Manor.
