Brentwood made to work hard for bonus point win

Fullerians came into this match on the back of a 3 match unbeaten run and sitting 6th in the league so they would have been confident of doing well against Brentwood. Again, Brentwood stood up to a strong pack and hard hitting defence to win comfortably in the end scoring 6 tries and consolidating their 2nd place position in the league.

Brentwood began the game strongly and scored a lovely try on 8 minutes. Bradley Burr collected a clearance kicked and beat 3 players and offloaded to Josh Stannard, quick hands between Tom Simpson and Adam Thomas on his shoulder put Ed Hornby clear to outpace the covering defender to score. A couple of chances went begging before Fullerians started to move up field using their forward strength to edge the scrum and lineout battles. Their scrum half picked up from the base of a 5metre scrum and ran in untouched to level the scores. Some brilliant defence from Brentwood kept the visitors out during their spell of dominance and when Tom Simpson beat 4 defenders to score Brentwood’s second try it felt like the turning point of the game. The rest of the half was spent in the Fullerian’s half and Josh Woodcock powered over to make the score at halftime Brentwood 19 -5 Fullerians with a couple of Burr conversions.

Brentwood had weathered the Fullerian storm and looked to extend their lead in the second half. This they did with some strong forward play and slick back play. With Tidje Visser, Louie Payne, Ben Amato pushing the defence back with big carries, Brentwood utilised the space to create multiple chances early on but a contentious call from the referee and a couple of handling errors meant at least 15 points went begging until Stannard hit a gap to score the bonus point try and see Brentwood get some reward for a brilliant spell of rugby. Burr then capped a fine display with a try of his own which was brilliantly converted by Henry Bird. Brentwood’s dominance was further rewarded with a try from Chay Pollinger who beat 2 players to dot down in the corner after a strong carry from Charlie Wilkinson.

Brentwood saw out the rest of the game on the front foot but couldn’t extend their lead, the referee’s whistle signalling the end of a physical game.

The Davlav Man of the Match went to Tom Simpson. Secure under the high ball and eased any pressure with elusive running giving Brentwood some great field position. Scored a great try. Brentwood visit South Woodham Ferrers on 16th December for their last game of the year..
