Bridgnorth Champions, at last!

Bridgnorth Champions, at last!
There is no doubt that Stourbridge have the best Rugby arena in the Midlands and a huge crowd gathered for this North Midlands Cup final. Both teams observed two minutes silence to mark the passing of Derek Procter Bridgnorth's first Captain in 1962.
Bridgnorth have enjoyed friendly rivalry with both Dudley and Stourbridge over 57 years and although reaching the semi finals of this competition on at least four occasions they have never tasted victory.
The game kicked off with Dudley missing a penalty chance, but then they pinched the opening lineout ball to break clear and score under the posts . The simple conversion made the score 0-7.
Bridgnorth battled back through some fierce tackling for Afea Haisila…. to score at the other end Llew Williams converted and also added a penalty to put Bridgnorth in the lead 10-7. Jake Goulson leapt highest in the lineout and the pack gathered round to shove Dudley off the ball and secure another penalty for Williams
Bridgnorth then created a great bit of running and handling for workhorse Haloti Molitka to score and Williams simple conversion put Bridgnorth 20-7 in front at the break.
Bridgnorth brought Joe Cave off and Ryan Smeilus back on after a long lay off, Bridgnorth broke away and with a score looking likely but the referee brought play right back for a kick to Dudley
Dudley strangely went for the lineout and Bridgnorth gained possession and broke clear and the chance was gone. Bridgnorth took Jake Goulson off and gave Richard Hooper and big Charlie Wright
a game but Dudley pressurised the Bridgnorth line. Bridgnorth tried to run the ball from their own 5 metre line in short dashes and recycling, until the inevitable penalty gave Dudley a try under the posts . The simple conversion put them within a score 20-17.
With the Bridgnorth supporters biting their nails, the referees final whistle secured a hard won victory. Had Dudley taken the penalty a few minutes earlier they would have won the game.Under the strange rules that in the event of a draw, no extra time is played, the first team to score takes home the Cup.
Perhaps Bridgnorth's Derek Procter, looking down, pulled a few strings .

Jon Ritson of Andrews Ritson, Solicitors of Bridgnorth and sponsors of this match presented a bottle of Champagne to Bridgnorth's winning Captain and the Tanners Man of the Match for Bridgnorth was Afe Haisila.
Next week Bridgnorth travel to Nuneaton. Bridgnorth won by a single score at home 31-28
League leaders Scunthorpe on 6th April would be another nice scalp for this talented Bridgnorth team They drew 21-21 at Bridgnorth in December.. Watch this space.!
