Bottesford Town have won the Ian 'Chalkie' Whyte Memorial Shield.

Brigg Town played Bottesford Town in the Ian 'Chalkie' Whyte Memorial Shield. Whyte was a great man who did so much for both sides and many other clubs.

Bottesford ran out 3-1 winners after making an excellent start.

Brigg made three changes with Brett Canty, Adam Gowing and Steve McCarron replacing Jason Pembleton, Will Forrest and Charlie Dolling.

Bottesford began very brightly with early goals from Wayne Graves and Jacob Fenton.

Jake Reed then latched onto Paddy Shaw's long punt and chipped over the onrushing David Birch.

However, Daniel Boulton restored Bottesford's two-goal lead in the second half.

It could have finished 4-1 to Bottesford after they were given a late penalty. However, Shaw guessed correctly to save Boulton's spot kick.

At full time Bottesford were pleased to win the Memorial Shield. Brigg lost again and this time it was due to a poor start.

Assistant manager Simon Roach wasn't thrilled.

"Five or six players were unavailable - we would have done better with them. We're missing too many players at the moment.

"We made an awful start conceding twice in the first 10 minutes. We could then have been 4-0 down after half an hour.

"We had no shape in the first 30 minutes and left gaps open. It was by far the worst start we've made in pre-season!

"Thankfully, we improved pulling a goal back before half time. Afterwards we were the better side, but were unable to equalize.

"The last hour was good - the first half hour was very bad though. We should play well for 90 minutes in all of our matches.

"Anything less isn't long enough."

On Saturday, Brigg host Crowle Town Colts in a friendly (kick off 3pm).

Brigg (4-4-1-1): Shaw; Crawford, Canty (Osbourne 25), Rodgers (c), Gowing (Moloney 58); Pearson, McCarron, Raithby (Jaksics 63), Thompson; Reed (Lingard 70); Longbone.
