Brigg Town won 4-2 against Gainsborough Trinity Reserves.

Brigg beat Gainsborough's reserve side 4-2 at The Hawthorns. It was a thrilling game and Brigg kept their title hopes alive.

Brigg made no fewer than five changes. Will Forrest, Tom Pearson, Tom Raithby, Jake Parker and Joe Moloney replaced Matty Davies, Jack Tierney, Adam Gowing, Charlie Dolling and Jake Reed.

Early on Geno Robinson's shot was bravely blocked by Chris Rodgers.

Afterwards Paddy Shaw made a good save to deny Zach Casburn. His second attempt was cleared off the line by Ryan Thompson.

Joel Chapman then squandered a chance as Gainsborough continued to dominate.

Brigg scored against the run of play in the 15th minute. Moloney picked out Parker, who slotted home from the edge of the box.

Gainsborough responded with Chapman shooting just over the crossbar.

At the other end Parker's 20-yarder flew inches wide of the right post.

Brigg almost added a second goal in first half stoppage time. Thompson whipped in a free kick and found Rodgers, whose effort clipped the outside of the right post.

Brigg led 1-0 at half time, but Gainsborough equalized early in the second half.

Robinson cut inside from the left and squared for Ash McCewan to fire home.

Soon afterwards Shaw did well to keep out Casburn's shot.

Brigg had brought on some substitutes - one of them was Jonny Nicholls who scored on 73 minutes. He latched onto Thompson's pass and rounded Zak Dilly to restore the lead.

Thompson and Cameron Hill then came close before Brigg were given a penalty. Joe Edwards tripped Nicholls in the area so a spot kick was rightly awarded.

Thompson took it and made no mistake to double Brigg's advantage.

Late on Reed was denied by Dilly at full stretch, but Brigg scored another goal a minute later.

It came when Thompson swung in a corner and Cameron Houson rose highest to head home.

Gainsborough's response was a neat chipped goal by Casburn. It was a good finish, but nothing more than a consolation for the visitors.

The final score was 4-2 after a pulsating match. Brigg are now second and still have a chance of winning the league.

Manager Lee Thompson had mixed emotions.

"I wouldn't usually have any complaints after a great win. There are a few things that need addressing though.

"Our first half performance was one of the worst this season. We played poorly and were very lucky to go in 1-0 up.

"Changes needed to be made in the second half. When they were we started playing a lot better.

"All five subs contributed, especially Jonny Nicholls and Cameron Houson. They both scored and were terrific - the other subs did well too.

"We won because subs were made before it was too late. Not everyone in the starting eleven was great, but every substitution worked.

"It's a massive three points!"

On Saturday, Brigg host Lincoln Moorlands Railway in the Supplementary Cup (kick off 2:30pm).
