Brigg Town ran out 1-0 winners at Ruston Sports.

Jake Reed's goal earned Brigg a narrow win over Rustons. The margin of victory could have been greater, but 1-0 was fine.

Brigg made three changes with Paddy Shaw, Will Forrest and Joe Moloney replacing Declan Jordan, Sam East and Adam Gowing.

Early on Ryan Thompson's free kick was met by Reed, whose header was tipped over by Craig Turner at full stretch.

Thompson then whipped in a cross and Cameron Hill connected with a header that hit the post.

At the other end Joe Simpson headed wide from Lewis Smith's corner.

Afterwards Charlie Dolling blasted into the side-netting as the first half drew to a close.

Brigg picked up where they left off scoring in the first minute of the second half. Dolling dribbled round a few opponents and played in Reed, who sent a fizzing shot past Turner.

Skipper Chris Rodgers almost doubled the lead coming close soon afterwards.

Minutes later Moloney curled a 20-yarder inches wide of the post.

Late on Smith had an effort blocked by Forrest before shooting over inside a crowded box.

Brigg changed their shape and made tactical subs while Rustons pressed for an equalizer.

Brigg's plan worked and Scott Nicholson saw red for a rash challenge on Moody.

There should have been a late penalty when Tom Ardron brought down Moody in the box.

The linesman, who was perfectly placed, flagged knowing it was a foul. However, the referee failed to award a spot kick after consulting with him.

Brigg probably would have won 2-0 if it had been given. 1-0 was a good enough result though.

Assistant manager Simon Roach was content.

"The lads played quite well and won again so I was pleased. 1-0 flattered Ruston Sports - we could have won by more goals.

"We defended well and kept a clean sheet which was good. Paddy Shaw hardly had any saves to make in the whole match.

"We were very unlucky not to score in a promising first half. Thankfully, the goal came just after half time though.

"More goals could have followed, but one was enough in the end. This result has kept our title hopes alive for now.

"It was a good day at the office."

On Saturday, Brigg host Horncastle Town in the league (kick off 3pm).

Brigg (3-1-4-2): Shaw; Tierney, Rodgers (c), Forrest; Raithby; Thompson, Moloney (Smithson 76), Reed (Davies 82), Dolling; Hill (Nicholls 66), Moody.
