Town beat one of their lower mid-table rivals in the second tier of the Kool Sport Northern Counties East League as they bounced back from their midweek defeat at second-placed Askern Villa.

They opened the scoring midway through the first half when an in-swinging corner from Danny Ryan was turned in by a defender.

A good move ended with Wayne Crossley netting the second.

After the interval, Albion reduced the deficit when Town keeper Paul Brown carried a cross over his own line.

That led to a good spell for the visitors but Town substitute Mark Heppinstall restored the two-goal cushion when he netted the rebound after a Crossley shot had hit the post.

Brighouse boss Mark Brier said: “I’m very pleased but it’s strange because when we were beaten at Askern Villa I told the players that we would play worse this season but still win and that’s exactly what we have done.

“I think Paul was caught in two minds. He didn’t know whether to punch or catch and he ended up doing neither.

“It was a rare mistake. Our defence – keeper and back four – were outstanding but it just gave Taddy a lift and they had a little good spell. But I think it was the right result on the day.”
