Manager’s Thoughts Btfc U21

On Ossett Albion,

"First of all I thought the lads were fantastic. You could see we'd been working on certain aspects. We had a clear style of play. Before the game we created a derby like atmosphere which all of the boys bought into. We made a point before the game to talk about Normy (Jack Normanton) and George (George Clarke) who were starting for the first team that night. Both lads have deserved that achievement, however, we feel we have more players that technically and tactically could push into our first team or other local first teams at counties level if they applied themselves a little bit more at times. This involves consistent work-rate, effort but most importantly self-belief. We've got some cracking players in this group around the 18-20 age who shouldn't settle for U21 football. I want them to push themselves as far as they can go. I believe they can go further the lads i'm talking about and have so much confidence in them. Monday night we saw as close to a perfect performance as we have got so far. Tactically we were brilliant. Mentality from start to finish was spot on. You could argue we could have had 1 or 2 more goals, however, so could Albion with their main chance hitting the cross bar. We are happy, though. That's the best performance and result of the season. Like I've said we have managed to work on some things recently and they came out in the game. We saw players excelling that have recently struggled to find their best form. The de-brief was simple as all I said is "that is how you play football". They were fantastic. Full credit also to Albion who I thought were one of the best teams we've faced. And last but not least I thought the officials had a fantastic game, which is rare for me to say, as I love a moan about officials as you will know. But credit where it's due. They let the game flow when they could and they were largely unnoticed which is what officials want."

On Ossett Town,

"We've prepared for the game to be on. We will be ready whether it's on or off. We went 12 weeks without a game due to postponements and every single one was prepared for the same as we always do. Organisation is key and the weather can catch you by surprise sometimes. As for the game we are looking forward to another derby. We've had some good clashes with Ossett over the last 5 years that have turned quite feisty. It's as close to a local derby that we get and our first team is the same. They are always fast-paced, physical, passionate games. I love games against Ossett Town. Normally, Albion bring the better quality but the tides have changed in the last couple of years where Albion are now nearer the bottom of the EVOSTIK and Town were at the top fighting for the playoffs. They've now decided to merger as well but I'll be honest i've not read too much into what effect that will have on the U21 sides as it's irrelevant at this stage. Monday night we beat Albion and Thursday night we want to beat Town. That's the black and white of it. It shouldn't be difficult to get the boys up for the game. I had players coming off on 75mins and saying to me 'i'm available Thursday'.. so I already know they're up for the game. It will be hard to top Monday nights performance but we can certainly match it, although an away tie in Ossett causes us different problems i'm positive the lads will have the solutions."

On Team News,

"We do have a couple of forced changes in that Lewis Stead is unfortunately out with a broken ankle so Tobias Rawcliffe is coming in which was going to happen anyway. George Clarke will be with us after his stint with the first team. And we could possibly have Jack Normanton back in the side after also being away with the first team on Monday. Other than that the squad will be the same but we will look to make a few changes to get the subs from Monday starting places. As much as I don't want to change a winning side we are development side first and foremost and need to get the lads on the pitch from the beginning to see how they deal with the challenges put in front of them."

On Harrogate Town,

"Monday's game is at the very back of our minds as we have Ossett first. However, it is in our minds. It's against a big club who are top of the league by 14 points. We are confident in our ability but it will be a very hard task going there and doing something nobody has done yet in picking up points off them. We're capable, though and we're excited for the game as well as Thursday because these games will test not only our players but test us as coaches also."

On First Team Involvement,

"Yes, I have started to help out on the first team staff as and when they don't clash with the U21s. As it happens they are both going hand in hand at the moment, Monday aside, and i'm really enjoying the opportunity to work with Vill and the lads. We're not on the best run of form lately with indifferent decisions and results going against us but we will look to get back on track Saturday against Ramsbottom at home".
