Brighouse Town progressed through to the quarter-finals of the West Riding County Cup in emphatic style at Pontefract Cols, responding magnificently to going a goal down by scoring seven goals in reply.
Town started the brighter of the two sides, with Danny Ryan flashing the ball across the face of goal and Joe Pinnock heading over inside the first two minutes.Kark Amos shot wide before Pontefract had their first attempt at goal shooting wide after 12 mins. Town continued to have the upper hand, but fell behind after 18 mins after an uncharacteristic mistake by Paul Brown who allowed Dean Lackie to disposes him whilst trying to clear the ball up field and walk the ball into the empty net to give Pontefract the lead.
The goal knocked Town out of their rhythm and Pontefract grew in confidence. Chris Wdowczyk did brilliantly to clear off the line following a corner, then Brown redeemed himself by diving at the attackers feet and pushing the ball to safety in a one-on-one situation.
Town got back into the game on 38 mins when Karl Amos cut in from the right wing and just kept running until he got to the edge of the penalty box and then drilled a low shot in off the foot of the post to give Town the equaliser.
The second half started with Town back in control, taking only 5 mins to go infront with a really well worked move that ended with Jermain Manners setting up Jordon Maltas to hit a screamer into the top corner of the net. It got even better after 55 mins when Wdowczyk fed Manners who played the ball into Joe Pinnock's feet and the big man turned and fired in from 12yds to make it 3 - 1 to Town.
Town were full of confidence, Ryan Brook, Tony Nicholson and Sam Talbot were winning their personal battles and Wdowczyk's forward runs were causing Pontefract all sorts of problems. On 72 mins Manners made it 4 - 1 from the penalty spot after Pinnocks header was handled on the line and the defender was shown a red card. Three minutes later Town scored again with a lovely sweeping move involving Maltas and Pinnock, with Amos then laying the ball back into the path of Manners to provide the finish the move desereved.
Town's 6th goal was a real rarity, a headed goal from a corner, sub Christian Silkstone supplying the finish to Danny Ryan's delivery.
Town hadn't finished yet with Damien Place still driving them on in midfield and Paul Moore, who had replaced Nicholson, not allowing anyone to let up. Sub Jason Tiplady duly made it seven for Town when he crashed in a low shot after the ball had broke to him on the edge of the box.
Seven goals and through to the Quarter finals of this prestigious Trophy, a night for everyone associated with Brighouse Town to be proud.
