Latest League Update Bulletin #22

Weekly Bulletin Season 2013-14

Bulletin No 22
January 11th 2014

HADLEIGH MAKE IT 8 ON THE TROT

Hadleigh United continued their relentless form at the top of the Premier Division with an impressive 4-1 victory at Mildenhall Town on Saturday. It was their eighth successive league win.

There is a new team in second place after Haverhill Rovers came from behind to beat Newmarket Town 2-1. Daniel Jeffrey and Dalton O’Brien scored the Haverhill goals in a game held up because of an injury to Newmarket’s Richard Chadwick.

Next up for Haverhill is a trip to fourth placed Gorleston. The Greens were on Norfolk Senior Cup quarter final duty on Saturday beating Great Yarmouth Town 4-1 in front of 234 spectators.

Godmanchester Rovers slipped to third place following a third successive defeat. They lost 2-0 at home on Saturday to Felixstowe & Walton United, who themselves are creeping up the table and now sit in fifth place.

It was a good day for new Woodbridge Town Manager Lee Elliston. Rock bottom Woodpeckers gained only their second win of the season and their first away from home after leaving FC Clacton with a 3-2 win. Barry Leatherdale had made sterling efforts to get the Rush Green Bowl playable and he must have wished he hadn’t bothered!

Ipswich Wanderers continue to pick up points in the First Division and their 6-1 success at Downham Town on Saturday has moved them into the promotion positions, but only on goal difference from Swaffham Town (who Wanderers entertain next Saturday), Halstead Town and Haverhill Borough. Whitton United and Fakenham Town both had good away wins to keep them in first and second places.
FA VASE RETURNS ON SATURDAY

Next Saturday sees a return to FA Vase action with three Thurlow Nunn League teams involved in the Fourth Round ties.

Brightlingsea Regent entertain Bodmin Town with their opponents leaving Cornwall early on Friday afternoon for the long trek east. Bodmin are the defending South West Peninsula League Champions and currently sit in second place in the table.

Norwich United make their Fourth Round debut at Bedfordshire side Ampthill Town, leaders of the Spartan South Midlands League. Step 4 applicants Ampthill have had home wins over Barking and Beckenham Town so far in the competition and last season went out 2-1 at home to Hadleigh United at the Fifth Round stage.

Brantham Athletic have a third successive away draw, this time at East Preston, near Littlehampton. East Preston, like Brantham, have applied for Step 4 football next season, and are currently the unbeaten leaders of the Sussex League. Their only defeat this season has been at Ryman League Chatham Town in the FA Cup.

Meanwhile Hadleigh United have been handed a Fourth Round bye following an FA decision to remove both Moneyfields and Bitton from the competition after their Third Round match was abandoned. The Brettsiders had been due to face the winners but will not now play until the Fifth Round on February 18th. It is understood that the Fourth Round winner’s prize money of £2,000 is to be paid to Hadleigh.

WHITTON UNITED YOUTHS IN THE GOALS

Whitton United maintained their 100% record in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League with a thumping 16-0 victory at Bungay Town on Wednesday evening. Whitton are the only team across all five divisions yet to drop a point.

NEXT BULLETIN

Please note that the next Bulletin will not be produced until Tuesday January 21st.
INCREASE IN PREMIER DIVISION ATTENDANCES

The majority of Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division sides are seeing an increase in their league attendances this season. Only 6 of the 20 teams have a lower average than last season.

The biggest increase has been at Brightlingsea Regent where the average attendance has doubled from their promotion season of 2012/13. The highest league crowd has been the 258 at the Gorleston v. Kirkley & Pakefield Boxing Day clash, although there were 260 at FC Clacton for their FA Cup tie against North Greenford United earlier in the season.
