League Update, Bulletin #31

Weekly Bulletin Season 2013-14

Bulletin No 31
March 17th 2014

IN THE LEAGUE ON SATURDAY

Godmanchester Rovers completed the double over league leaders Hadleigh United with a 4-2 victory at The Millfield on Saturday. The home side twice came from behind to go in 2-2 at the interval but second half goals from Nius Savalnieus and Jamie Blackwell sealed the win for the visitors. Hadleigh have now lost their last 4 home games, two in the league and one each in the Red Insure Cup and FA Vase. Next Saturday they visit second in the table Felixstowe & Walton United.

Ely City leap frogged over their hosts and out of the relegation places with a last gasp 4-3 victory at FC Clacton. Goalkeeper Lee Pacey scored the added on time free kick winner for the Robins, the second time he has scored at the Rush Green Bowl. Ely City have now won 21 of their 22 points away from home.

Whitton United extended their lead at top of the First Division with a 4-1 success at Downham Town, their fifth league win in a row. Also celebrating their fifth successive win were Stowmarket Town who beat Saffron Walden Town 3-1. Stowmarket do not play again until Tuesday March 25th when they travel to Whitton, whose only league defeat this season was at …. Stowmarket.

NORFOLK HOP GOES WELL

The second of the League Groundhop Days went well in Norfolk on Saturday with Norwich United recording their highest league attendance for over 5 years and Great Yarmouth Town their best since relegation to the First Division. Gorleston were the third club involved and have written to the league to say how well the day went.

FELIXSTOWE AND NEWMARKET IN RED INSURE CUP FINAL

Felixstowe & Walton United booked their place in the League Challenge (Red Insure) Cup Final with an extra time victory over Brantham Athletic on Tuesday evening. A late penalty from Danny Thrower took the game into extra time after Simon Mann had given Brantham a 1-0 interval lead. Goals from Ryan Clark and Andy Crump sealed the Seasiders victory and they now face Newmarket Town in the Final at Diss Town on May 5th.

LEAGUE AGM

The League AGM is to be held at Needham Market FC on Saturday June 21st at 2.00pm.
HADLEIGH UNITED PRESENTATION

Before Saturday’s match against Godmanchester Rovers there was the presentation to Hadleigh United of the Thurlow Nunn Performance Award for December and January.

The club received a cheque for £150 and there was also a £100 cheque for the Club’s chosen charity, Woolverstone Wish (www.woolverstonewish.org.uk) which is raising money to refurbish the chemotherapy outpatient clinics and day unit in the Woolverstone wing of Ipswich Hospital.

Pictured receiving the award from League President John Day is Hadleigh United Chairman Rolf Beggerow. Looking on is Alex Handsaker from Thurlow Nunn Limited.

ONE HAPPY SON, ONE NOT SO HAPPY

Management Committee member Danny Coyle must have had divided loyalties on Saturday afternoon. Son Kevin was playing for Brightlingsea Regent who were hosting Diss Town, managed by another son, David. Diss took a 1-0 interval lead but two second half goals from Terry Rymer and a 25 yarder from a Kevin Coyle sealed a 3-1 Brightlingsea victory.
