On Saturday 30th July 2011 Spurs Legends arrived at North road to play a Brightlingsea regent X1.
The Brightlingsea squad included Matt Griggs, Rob Janeway, Adam Auger, Warren Joseph, Steve Dart, Julian Cole, James Cole, Dean Sillett, Mark Gridley, James Webster, Tony O Hara, Eamon o Hara, Geoff Russell, Sam Pritchard, Daryl Wallis, Seff Manesh. Stuart Rose and Terry Rymer.
The Spurs brought a strong squad including Paul Allen, Steve Sedgley, David Howells, Justin Edingburgh, Stuart Nethercott, Gary Brooke, Mark Falco amongst other stars past and present.
It was a superb day with between 350-500 people in attendance and they were able to watch a strongly contested game during which time Terry Rymer scored the first goal, smashing in from close range after a good save from the keeper. Deano then popped up with a wonder goal smashing into the top corner.
Spurs scored a penalty from David Howells after Auger smashed sedgley down 2 yards from goal (would have been sent off on another day) and then Micky Jarrett got spurs level.
Both teams had a string of other chances, Rymer going past the keeper and falling flat on his face (hahaha), then again selling the keeper but hitting the post, Grids missed also first knocking a volley into the path of coley to tap home and make it 3-2, and then again missing when in 1 on 1 hitting wide.
The game was sealed though when Rymer calmly from the edge of the box bent in to the far corner to make it 4-2.
The Spurs lads were 'spot on' all day and kindly stayed behind after for photographs, autographs and did a player presentation in which time they voted club captain Warren Joseph the man of the match (are they sure haha).
The club wishes to extend its thanks to all that helped on the day and made it possible to raise as much money as we have, this includes the referees and officials including Michael Tant, and the Brightlingsea X1 who tirelessly raised sponsorship money to play in the game and of course a big thanks to the Spurs team for making the hole day possible!!
Something which on the day itself everyone would be keen to do again next year!!!
