Baseball helps heal the wounded...


We know Brighton has had a club since the sixties, but take a look at this poster that celebrate some of the international alliances forged in wartime some years earlier. It was designed to promote a baseball match in Preston Park, Brighton, in 1917 between teams of American and Canadian troops. It encouraged local people to ‘Come and see our new Ally play’. A group of 50 injured men from the Royal Pavilion Military Hospital were among those who enjoyed the match, which was won by the Americans. It was widely covered in the local press, and reports included not just detailed explanations of the rules of the game but also references to the provision of chewing gum and peanuts, to make the soldiers feel at home...
