The boys turned up with the right attitude and managed to get a three point advantage in the first 5 minutes. Newent knew they were in for a tough game and fronted up against the Bac’s firery pack. A scrappy midfield battle began for most of the first half and one penalty converted by BAC and a try and missed conversion to Newent meant we went in at half time 5-3 behind.
Early in the second half Newent managed to get another try which was followed by a penalty. This made us focus more and the second half then changed momentum and Bac really turned up the heat. BAC managed to earn themselves another penalty this then created an unbelievable miracle in which Stuart Bowker managed to get the ball between the uprights. This unbelievable event gave the Bac belief and they dug in and were camped in Newents half for the majority of the second half. Two knocks on in the Newent 22 meant it was not going to be the Bristol boys’ day. Newent created a skilful try from inside their own half to finish the game 17- 6.
An enjoyable match that was fought right until the end thanks to the boys for digging in and efforts we must keep up. Heroic efforts go out to Stu Bowker and James Whitcombe for staying on the field after suffering injuries.
Some bad news is that Stu Bowker has broken his hand and will be out of action for up to ten weeks. Hopefully he will be back for tour and has promised he will return at fly half to show the rugby community his true calling. He has kindly offered to bring the water on for the remainder of the season and I hope we can all enjoy a refreshing “glass” of water from Mr Bowker.
