Final count down

The day looked to set good vibes across the Aero squad. Although we would be returning from a disappointing loss last week, everyone seemed to bounce back after a hard training session on Tuesday. The positive mentality slowly spread its way across the squad and after a few traditional routines pre-warm up and a testosterone fuelled yelling from Robbie Wilton, everyone seemed ready to go out and teach Ashley Down a lesson from the loss earlier in the season.

The whistle went, the game was underway and only moments into the game after a mistake in the middle of the field, and we lost possession and found ourselves outnumbered. The ball spread out wide and ran through an open defence to put us down by one try. With that said, we made a quick response. We had an in-form set of forwards and some slippery ground, we managed to get a scrum driven forward for what seemed an eternity and put over by Nath ‘should have been dick of the day’ Moore for an equalising try. Needless to say, because of the wind and every other natural factor, this was not converted. We soon set ourselves up to fail again with another lot of defensive difficulties. Their winger, heading towards the line and there was a single man in his way. 3 metres out from the line and of all people Elliot ‘worst winger’ Harrington was left with the decisive tackle. Surprise, surprise he could not stop the try although managing to keep hold of him. This time the try was converted. Some short time after and a great darting run left Robbie ‘wants Kelly’ Wilton was in touching distance of the line and after a stretched arm from the match day prop caused for another try. After the effort at the posts, the score was 12-10. To try and gain the lead we changed our kick taker and slotted a penalty. A few more plays, back and forward and some questionable box kicking and handling, we lost another try and they scored a penalty late on to take us in at the break 22-13 down.

After the break, the weather turned for the worst and we were ready for it. We kept strong for most of the half. A lot of back and forth play and we managed to retain a lot of possession. No real breaks came around from either team and for the majority, the halves score line remained 0-0. Typical for the season, Elliot ‘always injured’ Harrington came off due to hamstring issues and somehow the team seemed stronger although losing the top class winger. After some tough and close play in defence, Nath decided that enough was enough and conceded a penalty and won himself a beautiful yellow card. 10 minutes to go and tensions were rising; Bryn found a break through and brought us within 4 points of the win. Need I say any more about the conversion? 4 points behind and 6 minutes of the game left, Nath was back on and we were making a brave and strong last ditch attempt to score. Tony’s ‘special’ friend, who had put in an amazing shift through the day with his crunching tackles and good breaks, was left with the decisive play. We were metres from the line in the last phase of play in the game and Flynny was brought down questionably. We looked up in hope as the whistle blew for an offence, but typically as the game had gone, the ref was not in our favour. Full time came and the game was lost, 22-18.
