Police Scotland West defeat Gwent Police 29-17 at Stourbridge RFC

The final of the Police Sport UK Rugby Knockout Competition 2013/14 was contested by Police Scotland West and Gwent Police on 23 April at Stourbridge RFC.

There was a sizeable crowd at the venue and much was expected of both teams which included 17 players who currently or previously represented their respective Forces with the British Police Rugby Section.

The Scots started the brighter of the 2 teams scoring early into the game after good multi phase rugby committed the Gwent defence and winger Aaron Rankin (Marr RFC) used his pace to create the space to beat his opposing number and score, the opening try was converted by fly half Ryan Moffat (Whitecraigs RFC). The middle part of the first 40 minutes was hotly contested with Gwent’s larger pack determined to dominate and both teams made some crunching tackles to nullify the opposition attack. A penalty was awarded to Gwent resulting from good forward play and a Scottish player being caught coming in from the side was converted by their full back Gareth Williams. A yellow card was shown to one of the Gwent forwards after 25 minutes which handed a numerical advantage to PSW and they seized their opportunity. They began moving the ball from the point of contact quickly and exploiting their extra player resulting in PSW scoring 2 tries before half time through loose head forward Chris Nisbet (Marr RFC) and centre Phil Nicol (Whitecraigs RFC) for a half time score of PSW 22 – Gwent 3.

With the heavens opening at half time the second half was destined to be a less expansive game. It was dominated by forwards play with most of the possession and pressure belonging to Gwent Police in the first 20 minutes of second half. This was highlighted with 2 penalty tries being given from 5m scrums which were duly converted by Gareth Williams. Despite the Gwent efforts, the Scottish line held firm thanks to some committed tackling throughout the team. With 5 minutes to go the score was PSW 22 - Gwent 17. Gwent having won a lineout 5m from the Scottish line it looked as though the game might go all the way to the wire, but the referee deemed that Gwent had infringed and it gave PSW a chance to clear their lines. Having moved further up the pitch towards the half way line, PSW continued to retain the ball and put several phases together before replacement scrum half Scott Johnston (East Kilbride RFC) chipped in behind a ruck and darted through to retrieve his kick. He found himself one on one with a Gwent player in their 22 and 2nd row forward Jamie Howarth (Whitecraigs RFC) was there in support to receive the pass to score a try in the 79th minute to secure the match. The try was converted from out wide by Ryan Moffat.

The referee blew for full time and a final score line of Police Scotland West 29 – Gwent 17.

Chief Constable David Shaw, Chairman of the British Police Rugby Section presented the trophy to winning captain and tight head forward Jim McArthur (Dunoon RFC) following the match which had been contested in true sporting spirit by both teams.

Police Scotland West are only the second Scottish team to ever win the PSUK Rugby Knockout title since the competition began and after winning the National Police 7s title in September last year, they became the only Police team to ever hold both UK Police rugby titles (7s and XVs) in a single season.
