Bears held at Oakland's Park

Second placed Chichester City may have scored more league goals than any other team in the Premier Division but they failed to find the back of the net in both their league matches against Broadbridge Heath who followed up their 2-0 opening day home win to come away from Oakland’s Park with a hard fought 0-0 draw on Saturday.

The home side had the better chances in the first half with their leading scorer Scott Jones going close on 7 minutes with a curling right foot shot from the edge of the area that went just wide and a few minutes later his strike partner Dave Herbert side-footed an effort inches wide of Michael Chester’s right post. Herbert was again in action with a shot from 20 yards that flew high over the crossbar but the biggest talking point of the half was when Heath striker Devon Fender burst into the Chichester penalty area with the ball at his feet and was brought down by a defender for what looked a clear penalty but to everyone’s surprise the match referee waved away the Heath players appeals and allowed play to continue. The home-side had one more chance before the break when Dan Hegarty got on the end of a right wing cross but put his header straight into the arms of Heath keeper Michael Chester.

Heath started the second half on the ascendency with Tom Bold testing the hosts goal-keeper Anthom Ender with a free kick from 25 yards which the keeper comfortably saved and Ender was in action again minutes later to save a low right shot from Fender.

The hosts started to get on top and Michael Chester made a superb one handed save from Jones pushing his goal-bound effort onto the post and out to safety but the home-side missed an easy chance to score when the ball was crossed from the right to Jones at the far post who headed it down to his striker partner Herbert six yards out but he put it wide.

The Heath players continued to defend as if their lives depended on it and Chester was again forced into action with another superb reaction save midway through the half to deny substitute Kaleem Haitham.

In the closing minutes a long ball was played forward to Heath striker Javlon Campbell who battled hard for the ball with the Chichester centre-back Jack Lee, he shrugged off the defender and ran through on goal before slotting with his right foot under the advancing Ender for the what appeared to be the winning goal but as he reeled away to celebrate with his team-mates the referee had been called over by his assistant and after consultation he disallowed the goal for an infringement and the game ended goalless.

After the game Heath Assistant Manager Steve Whiting said “I’m really pleased with the point and the work rate of our players who battled hard throughout”. On the penalty shout he said “I thought it was a penalty and so do all the players but the referee didn’t and he’s the one that matters”. On the disallowed goal he said “Both the players were trying to win the ball, there was some contact but I didn’t think it was a foul, none of their players appealed for a foul not even the defender who was with Javlon, that suggests to me it wasn’t a foul”.

Team: M.Chester, Frankland, Robinson (Griffin 75), Findlay, Chester, Bold, Weller, Godfrey, Fender, Martin, Campbell.
