Can we have some background information on you please Jay?
I’m an easy going, relaxed and humble kind of guy. Fortunately for Broadley FC once I step on that pitch the beast is unleashed. I’m a 2nd year sports Student at BG, Scunthorpe born and bred! Having 12 Years at my old club Crowle Colts, and a year playing for BG see me an experienced footballer having played every position on the pitch. A lifetime Scunthorpe United fan I have had over a decade of watching footballing brilliance to call on, they even gave me a trial but I had to pull out due to injury. On many occasions I have been compared to the likes of Yaya Touré and the one and only Cheik Tiote so don’t be surprised to see the name Jay Smyth in the conversations of legends. So that’s the kind of footballer you will be getting, a quick tough tackling, no nonsense centre midfielder that to be fair can pick out a pass.
This will be your first season in the Lincoln Sunday League, why have you chosen Broadley FC as your first club?
Well personally I like the ambition of the club; I see no reason why one day we can’t be challenging the Real Madrid’s and Manchester United’s of this world! Also knowing what this club means to many of its associates, executives, players and management team I know there is a true passion and I hope given the chance to do these individuals justice in my performances on the pitch.
You were one of 4 players the manager was going to sign for his previous club, before resigning and taking up the post of Broadley FC. Is the manager's belief in you a key factor in signing?
I have known the boss has had an eye on me for a while, his determination and ambition to go out of his way to sign me helped. I’m even living in the management team’s old house next year! I am grateful the gaffer has given me the platform to return to Sunday league football and I appreciate this. I hope to repay this faith by helping the team be number one in our league, after all second place is just first loser.
There is strong competition for places throughout the team, but particularly in your position of centre midfield. Is the competition some you thrive upon or is it a concern to you?
Well as I’ve previously stated I've been compared to some greats, for example Gilberto Da Silva and of course Cheick Tiote! I see no concern, I thrive under pressure and it sees me at my best. If someone comes into the team in my position then they must be a better player than me, a Messi for example so it can only be good for the team. If this is the case I will work hard until I can take my place in the team, I’m not a good bench warmer so I’ll do everything I can to be on the pitch.
The squad is a very young one; do you think the lack of experienced heads will be a problem going into the season?
No, I don’t believe age matters; as long as we have players with blistering pace up front such as Olly Booth we will always carry a threat. Our backline will have a clear height advantage, right back in particular, and of course Cheick Tiote is on the pitch. But in all seriousness I do not. I think youth makes for the perfect attacking blend of football. We may still have much to learn but we are likely to play without fear, with energy pace and the pure belief we can do anything
once we step over that white line that can only bring success.
With a majority of the lads having some form of affiliation with Grimsby Town and yourself being a Scunthorpe United fan, are you looking forward to the banter throughout the season?
Well personally I don’t see how there is a link between the two clubs, after all Scunthorpe is a football league club and Grimsby is not. Scunthorpe are likely to be promotion candidates this season whereas I expect the same old empty promises from town. If anything Broadley FC should be looking towards the Iron as an example to follow this season.
And finally, what are your personal aims for the season, and where do you think the team will finish?
Well in the long term I hope this club becomes massive but you don’t become world beaters overnight, the Champions League will have to wait. This season I expect a good strong league season and with the players we have I genuinely see no reason why we can’t go all the way to the title and who knows, with the luck of the draw anything can happen in the cup? If we turn up we have the ability in this club to beat anyone so I guess cementing a place in the first eleven and bringing home some silverware for this club is my main aim. I can’t wait to get started and I'm chomping at the bit to start pre-season and meet up with all the lads. Here’s to the start of something special!
