With Storm Dennis virtually wiping out the whole of the North Wales football scene only 2 matches survived, Bro Goronwy’s next opponents Bangor 1876 were always going to get the go ahead for their match on the 3G at Treborth but remarkably to most this NWCFA Junior Cup 3rd round tie also went ahead in at times very testing conditions.
It was never going to be a match for the footballing pureists in the menacing weather but ultimately the hosts adapted the better to send them through into the next round.
With the advantages in favour of the visitors in the 1st period at the end of the tie they would regret not making the most of the prevailing wind, disappointingly not troubling home keeper Rhys Owen enough and it would be Llangoed who were to cope the best racing into a 2 goal lead.
Jac Thomas pulling a goal back before the interval was to be in vain as Llangoed raced away with the cup tie after the break.
Both sides had openings moments after the first whistle, Gwyn Hughes for the hosts, Jac Thomas for the visitors, both unable to finish past the relevant stoppers.
Due to the weather chances were few and far between and it was a set piece that put Llangoed ahead, all be it wind assisted to deceive Edney in goal.
Wayne Thomas carefully placing the 20 yard free kick before dispatching his right footed shot over the wall and, with a generous help from the prevailing wind, the ball moving its direction to end in the back of the net.
Miscommunication led to Bro conceding again not long after, keeper Edney hesitant in taking command and with centre half Iwan Williams expecting the clearance Tom Zalot nipped in to stroke the ball side footed low into the corner for 2-0.
Bro were thrown a lifeline after 37 minutes, again the weather a key factor in drawing out a goal keeping mistake, Liam Billington chipping into Jac Thomas’ path, Rhys Owen not able to collect clearly, for Thomas to make it 2-1 at the break.
Tom Zalot couldn’t reproduce his cool finish minutes after the restart, again beating Edney but this time his shot striking the foot of the post.
Llangoed took control after 53 minutes, Edney failing to get any distance on his goal kick, Arwyn Morris taking full advantage curling his strike over the gloves man from the edge of the box to give Llangoed their 2 goal cushion once more.
Llangoed could look forward to a place in the quarter final on the hour mark as Sam Gregson’s header put the tie to bed.
The corner struggled to be cleared for Gregsons backwards header to loop over Billington on the line.
Ryan Jones wasn’t quick enough to get his shot away and with Jac Thomas finding the target but Owen saving well Bro couldn’t find any joy from a testing afternoon.
