In the preview to this match I asked for a response to last week's poor first half performance and a full 60 minute showing from the boys, that showcased us as the good and improving team we are. Sadly, for the second week in succession we put on a first half performance that simply let ourselves down and was probably our worst showing of the season.
Granted, I changed the formation slightly to a 3-2-3 shape, but that was designed to help us gain more control of the ball by creating more passing options when in possession and allow us to both defend and attack in greater numbers. The idea was sound, but the execution was really quite poor. Time and again we panicked in possession and invited pressure on our goal by diving in to challenges rather than just standing up to the opposition. With the exception of Joby Johnson, everyone was giving the ball away. In fact, Joby seemed to be simultaneously doing the job of 3 or 4 of his teammates as well as leading the line for our attacks.
Within 6 minutes we were one down to the Vipers after some very sloppy play by our covering midfielder handed them a gift of a goal. Within 3 minutes, it was the other midfielder's turn to completely switch off when, at a corner, he was drawn to the ball like a moth to a flame, leaving the man he was meant to be marking to find the corner of our net with an unchallenged strike from the edge of the box. Easy.
Now, granted, R&R Vipers were arguably the best side we had played this season. They were certainly the most organised. More reason, therefore, not to gift wrap goals for them. What disappointed more was that we just weren't reacting or changing any of the poor play we were showing in the early stages. For the remInder of the half we continued to invite pressure on our goal as we kept giving the ball away. On the rare occasion we managed to break in to their half we picked the wrong option and passed when we should have shot and shot when there was a better option on for a pass. All in all a very frustrating 30 minutes. Which, after last week, felt a little like deja vu. At least last week we were creating chances. We had worked their goalkeeper once in half an hour and he had proven to be more than a match.
I was annoyed at half time. Nee frustrated. We had played well in the second half last week. Trained really well yesterday, and yet here we were, letting ourselves down. In recent weeks, if not months, I had bowed to a little pressure from the boys, allowing some of them - against my better judgement - to play in the positions they wanted to. Well enough of that. As far as I was concerned this second half was on me. I told the boys I didn't care about the result of the game but wanted a reaction from them. So, Cameron and Joe were moved into the back three with Callum. The ever-energetic Joby was moved in to midfielder alongside Noah, leaving a front three of Reece, William and George.
The half time reset seemed to take effect immediately as we passed the ball with more purpose and built from the back with an improved purpose and intelligence. Within 9 minutes, Joby (who else!) won the ball in midfield before carrying it down the left channel and unselfishly feeding the ball inside to a grateful George to slot home. We were back in the game.
That goal galvanized us completely. As almost instantly we returned to type and the team I recognised were back. For the remaining 20 minutes it was one way traffic. Nevertheless, it was another 11 minutes before we achieved parity. After a build up down our left side, one of Callum's throw-ins caused panic in the Viper's nest. A blind clearance only found MOTM-elect, Joby Johnson, and from 20 yards he picked his spot in the goal.
Not for the first time this season we were the beneficiary of a poor goal kick and within three minutes of drawing level we had our noses in front as Cameron returned a feeble kick in to the roof of the net for 3-2 and another 'Weekly Challenge' point. That's 9 in all! 1 to go.
The intensity of our play and pressure remained high for the last 10 minutes with Cam in particular getting lots of joy bombing down his right wing. It was one of these raids which led to our fourth. George latched on to Cameron's pass on the breakaway and George's cross come shot was unluckily diverted in to his own net by a Vipers defender as the otherwise excellent goalkeeper advanced.
It didn't feel like a 4-2 win at half time but credit to the boys for getting it together in the second half. Joby aside (who was excellent all game) - As bad as each of them were in the first half they were all superb in the second half. So hats off to them. Particularly the back three who were very disciplined in their roles and played well and held their shape as a three extremely well. Defensively, That was the best half hour of our season so far.
All in, it was a great test today. The opposition coaching team were very chirpy until 40 minutes and were near silent after that. If that's what our football does to people, long may it continue.
Great scenes on the touchline in the second half, it was a very enjoyable watch from my side of the pitch. Keep it up.
Easiest MOTM award ever today as Joby took the whole game in his stride and capped it with a well taken goal. Well done Jobe. Keep it up too.
