Congratulations to Andy Brisdon (pictured left) and Ethan Barrett (right) who will be playing at Wimbledon this year.
These two great friends, both living in Sale, met at nursery and started playing tennis together at an early age. They are members of Brooklands Sports Club and their early training has been under the watchful eye of Oli Jones, Head Tennis Coach at the venue.
More recently the boys have intensified their training and with the support of both families have worked their way up through the rankings. After Andy broke into the county squad in 2016, Ethan kept working and this year both players played for Cheshire County U14 in the County Cup. Andy and Ethan also play doubles together, and are currently the U14 Cheshire County junior champions.
Both players entered the North of England qualifying Road to Wimbledon competition which is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis and gives players aged fourteen and under the opportunity to progress through to compete on the world famous grass courts at Wimbledon. This year the junior matches were played over the final weekend of the Ilkley Trophy, in Yorkshire, where many professional players compete to boost their chances of entering the main draw at Wimbledon.
Having successfully got through the knock-out stages on Saturday 22nd June, both boys returned on Sunday for their singles finals. Ethan managed to get through a tough three set match to win 6-2, 6-7, 10-5. Andy's match followed on immediately afterwards and he was determined to get there with his best friend. After an epic contest, Andy won 7-5, 6-3. The picture shows both boys having a well deserved ice cream after their final wins.
The National Finals will be held over the period 11th to 17th August at the Wimbledon All England Lawn Tennis Club. Wishing the boys super good luck and enjoy the experience!!
