This weekend sees the North Edinburgh side in National Shield Quarter Finals duty against their Caledonian League 1 hosts, in what will be the sixteenth meeting between the sides.

It was only two seasons ago that Broughton reached the last four in the same competition and they head up the M90 to North Inch looking to continue the Road to Murrayfield with of a successful detour against one of Scotland’s oldest rugby clubs.

When the SRU started the National Leagues in Season 1973-74, Broughton like Perthshire were placed in Division 3. During the period when both clubs were in this Division, they met four times with Perthshire being victorious in all four games.

At the end of season 76-77, Broughton were relegated to National 4 – and they were joined by Perthside for the 79-80 campaign. Thankfully the unwanted run of defeats was halted, with Broughton running out 9-25 winners, courtesy of a fine person haul of 17 points from Gordon Hunter and tries from Keith Angus and Stewart Munro.

They were to meet one more time in competitive action in March 1984, once again in Division 4. Perthshire were victorious at home 11-0 in an end of season clash that helped secure the title for Saturday’s opposition.

There have been a total of nine friendlies played between 1971 & 1990, including a 0-0 stalemate in March 1979.

Both XVs go into the tie on the back of decent league victories, Perthshire having a comfortable 73-15 win over Panmure whilst Broughton defeated Dalkeith 64-12 at Wardie last weekend.
