The Road to Murrayfield continues this weekend as Broughton Men welcome Carnoustie to Wardie in the Quarter Final of the National Shield Competition.

Saturday’s visitors ply their trade in Caledonia Region League 1, finishing their season just outside the top 3 play-off places in the Midlands Conference having won and lost seven games equally throughout their campaign.

For Broughton, their East Region 1 campaign is still in full swing however with three games left to play and two games in hand on second placed Haddington who they meet next on league duty, a runners-up spot is very achievable.

Of course, its not the first time the Clubs have met in competitive rugby. In the 1991-92 season, the sides locked horns in Division 6.

Carnoustie hosted the inaugural encounter on 7th December 1991 with Broughton coming away with a 0-54 victory. It was a tough old season for the Angus club who were to finish in bottom place.

Following Broughton’s drop from Division 6 in 1995-96, the Clubs were reunited once again, this time it was Carnoustie who were to not only come out on top in the new formatted home and away encounters (5-34 and 20-8) but went on to win the title too.

After a restructuring of the leagues to a regional format in 1999-00 the Clubs were placed into East and Midlands leagues respectively and have, until now, avoided each other in over 20 years of cup draws.

Kick-off at Wardie is 3pm.
