A member since the early 1980s, Stevie was a master of the dark arts within the Broughton front row, quickly establishing himself as a mainstay in the heart of the engine room.
So much so that at the end of 1990-91 season, he was awarded the Most Improved Player of the Year trophy by Head Coach Brian Darling who describes Stevie as “a good lively character to have around.”
Vice-Captain in 1992-93, Stevie was elevated to Club Captain the following season. During his term, he also joined the Fundraising Committee who raised more than the £10k target set to help build the new extension.
Stevie’s playing career was cut short a couple of years later when he underwent heart surgery. It didn’t prevent him from returning in 1997-98 to assist with coaching the forwards and had also agreed to take up the role as 2nd XV Manager.
A keen tourist, Stevie enjoyed subsequent travels to Leuven and Brescia for end of season tours. The latter trip ending in a cameo appearance in his beloved front row berth.
In December, Stevie joined many of his peers at the Club’s Centenary Dinner, holding court and sharing tales in his own imitable style.
Our thoughts are with Stevie’s family and friends during these most difficult of times.
Stevie’s funeral will take place on Monday 3rd February, 12 noon at Warriston.
