A Very Fitting Tribute

On Saturday April 16th Buckfastleigh Ramblers held a memorial day for Tammy Baker.

The Baker family have been an integral part of the club over the years. Her father Martin Baker was instrumental in getting the club reformed, and himself played for Ramblers in every decade of his life. In 2007 he was awarded "Valued Volunteer" by the RFU. Martin lost his five year battle with cancer in November 2008. His daughters Donna & Tammy remained part of the Ramblers family, and the club remained a tremendous support to them. In 2012 Tammy was diagnosed with Melanoma cancer, just a single mole on her leg, but it spread and for three years she remained positive and fought hard, but sadly lost her fight in December last year at only 39 years old.

The day kicked off at 3 o’clock with one minute applause to celebrate the life of a inspirational young woman. Tammy’s daughters, three year old Martha, and sixteen year old Paige, kicked off the match between Buckfastleigh Ramblers and Torbay Barbarians, an invitational side formed by Ramblers coach Tony Wolke. Current Ramblers were joined by past players to form a 37 man team to face the awesome Barbarians. Final result was Ramblers 7 – Barbarians 17, but the game was played in the spirit of the day and a real treat for the huge crowd on the sideline.
The match was followed by a Grand Auction & Raffle with hundreds of pounds worth of prizes donated by local businesses, community members, players, friends & family. A staggering £2, 900 was raised to go to Melanoma UK and a memorial headstone.
The day was well attended and a credit to the committee and club for making it such a special family day and fitting tribute.
Tammy's family send a massive thanks to the club and everyone involved.
