Buckingham Swans’ played host to a well-drilled Wasps II XV on Sunday as part of their pre-season friendlies. The Wasps fixture was the first of their warm up games prior to commencing in Championship North 1 for the coming season.
During the opening quarter the teams seemed evenly matched with both sides maintaining a strong defence. Wasps were the first to mark the scoreline with a quick pick and go allowing them to break the Swans’ line and score.
Despite losing a player to injury early on into the game Buckingham fought hard to keep the Wasps at bay and did not concede further points until the closing part of the first half. Wasps capitalised on the overlap and ran in three tries before the break, converting one. This left the scoreline 0 – 22 going into half time.
Following the break, Swans came out determined to make a mark and were awarded a penalty soon into the second half. Stepping up to put Swans on the score board, Kelly Wallis slotted the ball through the sticks.
During the course of the second half Wasps continued to utilise their extra player and excellent offloading and support play allowed them to run in several tries throughout the latter of the second half. Swans remained upbeat and fought hard to the end but Wasps capitalised on a tiring side to increase their scoreline further.
Swans looked hopeful of breaking the Wasps’ defence with several opportunities to cut loose but were unlucky not to convert metres gained into points, kept out from the strong resistance of the Wasps’ line. Overall the game demonstrated a hard fought effort from both sides, ending 3 – 54. Women of the match were Steph Cregan and Kelly Harry.
This fixture provided an excellent grounding for the Swans to build on and their away fixture to Saracen’s next week will enable the Swans to fully utilise their pre season time and identify areas for improvement before the league commences on the 11th September.
