Buckingham Swans 5 Novocastrian Ladies 12
Buckingham Swans played host to northerners Novocastrian Ladies on Sunday in their penultimate game of the season. With the ground hard under foot and the sun beaming down to prove summer is on its way, the return fixture was set to be as well matched as the first.
Swans started well maintaining possession and terroritory in their opponents half. With good recycling a Swans’ score looked imminent but Novos kept them at bay. However Swans undeterred were able to break through with some well worked set play and good hands to release Jo Godfrey to go over in the corner.
Novos fought back from the restart but the teams were evenly matched with neither being able to break their oppositions defence. However as the half came to a close, Novos pushed forward and capitalised on a set piece from the scrum with their Number 8 breaking free from the back to go over to even the scores, 5 – 5.
After the break Swans got off to a confident start but the Northerners were keen to improve their lead. However strong Buckingham defence didn’t see them through until the mid point of the second half. A converted try took the score to 5-12 to the visitors.
Swans looked hopeful to make a comeback and made several breaks into the Novocastrian 22 but were unfortunate not to convert effort into points. A well fought game from both teams with a disappointing result for Buckingham Swans as they look to finish their season against Team Northumbria away next Sunday. Women of the match were Sian Brown and Holly Malins.
